I've found lots of information on them from 1886 on, but do not know anything about them between Sept 1883, when they arrived in New York from the SS Island.

In the Minneapolis, 1885 census, their 4 young children were listed with an Andrew and Mary Holt.

By the 1886 Mpls directories, Hans is listed as living in Mpls.

Thank you!

S Howell

So you want to know what they did during Spring of 1884? If they attended any Spring festival or something?

I think he will have all the info he can get for the period sept 1883 on to 1886. Census 1885 is the only he have between.

Thanks for the replies. I'm wanting to know where Hans and Laura lived in the US from the time they arrived in New York in September, 1883 until their first listing in Minneapolis in 1886.

Hi,

A 50th Anniversary story about the couple published in the Minneapolis Tidende on 3 Sept 1925 says:

"The goldbridegroom was born i Eker Prestegjeld near Drammen, Norway on the 8th of March 1850 and the goldbride whose maiden name was Laura Andrea Langum on the farm Langum in Skoger Prestegjeld near Drammen on the 10th of September 1855. They were married on the 27th of August 1875 in Sandhaugen (?) church in Drammen. They left Norway in August 1883 and migrated to Minneapolis hvor de siden han (?) (?) sit hjem."
Perhaps the Andrew and Mary Holt with whom the children are found in the 1885 census are actually Hans and Laura merely given more "Anglicized" names by the census taker?

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

I am afraid the 50th anniversary was one year too early, see their marriage record #3 right hand page.
The church was Strømsgodset.
Laura Andrea was not born in 1855, but Sept 7 1857, see #102
Hans Peters sister Elen Kirstine emigrated with them in 1883.

Both Einar and Jackie are correct about the Holthe's 50th anniversary- it seems much of the newspaper accounts I've read have inaccurate information. Their son-in-law, Henry Hertzenberg, was listed in his obituary as dying two days before he did, etc.

Jackie- where did you get the Tidende information? I have a copy of the actual annoubncement and have tried to muddle through a translation with a couple of my Norwegian dictionaries. There may be more information on them in that publication. Thanks all! Shari

Hi,

Minneapolis Tidende was a Norwegian language newspaper. The article on the Holt's 50th anniversary was clipped and included in the Rowberg Biographical File. I have occasional access to the Rowberg file on microfiche. The copy was in Norwegian and I roughly translated the section which seemed to deal with the question you had about where they lived.

The original copy of the Rowberg Biographical File is at the Norwegian-American Historical Association's archive on the campus of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

Hilsen,
Jackie
