Anton & others,
With a bit of research & luck believe have found Jorg & Signe marriage. This was 30th October 1924 in Richmond New York. Signe name was Davis. Still have had no luck with Doris Or Eleonore or for that matter Melvin, (Merwin) either under Davis or Hansen.

Hi Alan,

Here are the Melvin Hansen's in the rootsweb ( www.rootseb.com )Social Security Death Index who were born in 1917:

MELVIN J HANSEN 17 Oct 1917 01 Jan 2009 (V) 48910 (Lansing, Ingham, MI) (none specified) 363-12-8448 Michigan

MELVIN H HANSEN 04 Jul 1917 30 Jul 2001 (P) (72) (none specified) 468-18-9802 Minnesota

MELVIN CHARLES HANSEN 08 Jul 1917 11 Dec 2008 (P) 68510 (Lincoln, Lancaster, NE) (none specified) 506-01-7014 Nebraska

and there is only one Merwin Hansen:

MERWIN A HANSEN 17 Jul 1916 08 Nov 1993 57701 (Rapid City, Pennington, SD) (none specified) 471-01-2408 Minnesota

You could go to rootsweb and put on a postem to each of these with your question or order their Social Security application (SS-5) but be prepared for some wait and possibly expense with the SS-5.

Good Luck,

Jackie M.

Do you happen to know the name of the husband of Signe Davis.

There is in the 1920 US Census for Richmond County a part of Statten Island a Signa Davis age 30 born in Sweden, living with husband John Davis also born in Sweden, age 33. They have two children ArthurJ M Davis age 5 born in New York and Augustana male age 2 years 11 months also born in New York.

This would make Signa born in 1890 and son Arthur born in 1915 Arthur is listed as Arthur J M so the M would need to stand for Merwin or Melvin to fit. Also there is the second child who does not appear in the 1930 census with George and Signe.

Jackie & Anton,
Thanks for the response. I do not think any of the Melvins or merwins are the one looking for. He was possible born a Davis, do not know if he adopted the name Hansen. Anton, do not know Signe's 1st husbands name, IU had also found that one also another but found that also in the 1930 census. I am still hunting will update if any more found. Thanks again.

Alan.

Anton,
Thanks for keeping in touch it is appreciated.
As listed we do have Melvin in the US Army 1941/44 as Quarter Master Battalion, and living in Louisiana 1941.
Does the Enlistment Record give you a date?
Alan.

There also is an on-line data base of US Phone and Address Directories 1993-2002. Interestingly enough for those years there is a Melving G Davis listed as living at 306 Guyon Avenue, Staten Island. If you Google Map that you find it is only about 2 miles from your 113 Eltingville, Staten Island Address. Could have been the same Melving G Davis, hard to say, he would have had to been in his eighties by then but it is possible, that after World War II he came right back to where he grew up. Good luck on your search.

Anton & Jan,

Would have been nice to have claimed Melvin but being born around 1948 does not fit, unless a son?? Could you help were I might start with Doris & Eleonore, I need a starting point before or after WW11. Their birth dates are also only approx. Any help gratefully received.

Alan.

The problem with Doris & Eleonore is that they're females... Not that it's anything wrong with that, but it makes them harder to trace...

Chances are that they are married, and thus listed with their husbands name in the few public records that are available after 1930.

A question... what is your source for Jorg Hansen, dead on July 4th, 1952? A letter? If so, from where is the letter posted?
I'm wondering where he died. The local newspaper could have had his obituary.

SSDI (Social Security Death Index) does not have his record, but I found these ones:

Henry Hansen, 08 Aug 1885 - May 1973, last residence Elmhurst, Du Page, Illinois
Signe Hansen, 11 Feb 1890 - Mar 1978, last residence Elk Grove Village, Cook, Illinois
Signe Hansen, 17 Jun 1891 - Aug 1973, last residence Buffalo, Erie, New York

Regarding the 1930-census; Does the census list any month of birth for the people recorded?

Jan Peter

The 1930 US Census has a column for "Age at last birthday", for George Hansen is listed 44, for Signe is listed 40, for Melvin is listed 13, and for Doris is listed 4. So the birth year has to be calculated. The date on the census is April 11,1930
