The bygdebok for Avaldsnes is a 2 volume work and the author/editor was Arnvid Lillehammer. (Source: The LDS library catalog at familysearch.org) I have another bygdebok for another section of Karmøy by that same author and published in a very similar time period. I've found his work to include photos of the farms, diagrams of farms in relationship to each other and photos of the people who lived there. An excellent work and fairly easy for the novice in using such a Norwegian publication.

I recommend that you make efforts to consult those two books for Avaldsnes. The extraction of the information on the website Slektsforum Karmøy is nice for collecting a fast outline of family tree information back into earlier generations but it does not include the photos, diagrams or the name index that author includes with his actual books.

(Scotland) Mai 26.
Bergen is the capitol of western Norway.

Thanx for the information. The family is coming round tomorrow for a birthday celebration and I will be able to share with them all the new information on the family. There is another question I have about a document I have for Berthe Maline; what is it? I have put it up on my blog page at http://jimmyjamjarsblog.blogspot.com/.

Many thanks for the latest info and the translation of the seaman's log.

The "blue" document is an attestation of personal identity for moving out of the Avaldsnes Parish. (Text to follow)
AQh I see, both documents are the same. It says:

Hi,
it´s unusual and interesting to see the "Pass ports" in such a good condition after so many years, most of them are gone.

I´ll continue with Baar (Baard) Baarsen Østrem.
From the 1801 you will see he was a "Bonde" farmer and "Lods" pilot on Utsira, he married 1790 on Torvastad to Siri Larsdatter on Dominica 6 p. Trinity: July 11 (Latin for 6. Sunday after Whitsun), left page line 5 from bottom.

In 1819 Baar was employeed as a public pilot on Utsira, before that he either had to offer his assistance to the ships, it was a competition, firts man on board was hired, or perhaps he was a co pilot for Gudmund Thomesen, see Østrem, Gudmund was employeed as a public pilot 1780. Baar Baarsen Østrem died Sept. 21. 1827.

Baar was born on Hasseløen (Hazel island), Torvastad sub parish, father was Baar Hasseløen, christened Mai 11. 1756, left page line 9 and 10 from top, line 8 ends with; NB: 11th Maji
blev Døbt Baar Hasseløens drenge=barn kaldet Baar
was baptised Baar Hasseløens little=boy named Baar
here

Berhe Malene Rasmusdatter Gard´s children was born on Wigsnes/Vigsnes/Vixnæs/Vigsnæs/Visnes, same farm diff spellings.

Have a wondeful birthday tomorrow.

What would be the purpose of making such a document.? Would this be done prior to emigrating?

The reference to the place Vigs must be Vignes as that is where they farmed

I was always under the impression that Endre Mikal Osmundsen gård emigrated with his family but this paper would mean that he died on Norway. I am confused as I have a picture of Emma and her brother Bernt with their "Father" taken in 1943 in the USA which must mean that Berthe Malene remarried. Is there a way to find this out if it happened before they went to the USA? or if she remarried in the USA at some stage

I have a photo of Berthe Maline with her 4 children , Bernt Mikal, and Emma Marie which I presume must have been taken after the father and three sons died the other two must be Alfred Theodore and Amund Matthias. That would help date the photo

Such attestation documents were also used when persons moved to other parishes in Norway. Coming to a new parish it was used when persons were registered in the new parish.
I was not sure of the ?-marks but had the intention of checking the farm names, I have now changed the name and also seen from the babtismal record that "Berit Mikal" was a boy Bernt Mikal, see #152
Amund Mathias, see #74
Emma Marie, see #16
Reinert Olai, see #35, died Nov 4 1881.
Alfred Teodor, see #69
Reinert Olai, see #90, died May 7 1891.
The reason Alfred Teodor is not mentioned in the attestation is that he went to "Amerika", in 1895, see #3 and here
Berte Malene and the 3 children went to Haugesund, see #34-37

I forgot to post this document:
Utsira; Loser og Losbåter - Utsira; Pilots and Pilot boats, it confirm when Baar was born, click here

Bottom page in this document, open it by enter here. Top headline means: First name, Last name, Employeed, Born, Dead.
Wonder if Torkel Bårsen # 37 born 1820 is a son, Baar is #58

Hasseløen /Hasseløy where Baar was born 1756 is a small island outside Haugesund connected with a bridge today, Hasseløy in front.
