I have had some requests for any more photos I might have of my branch of the Rasmussens in South Africa, well I posted a few more that might be of interest on my Blog at http://jimmyjamjarsblog.blogspot.com/ .

there were so few Photos taken in the rural districts in the old days, folks having to wait until the travelling photographer came around to their area. My father was given a camera when he was 16 (I still have it) and at sea as an apprentice, but as film was expensive in those days we have very little record of those times.

Hello Neville,
thanks for nice pictures.
Within 2013 the probate registers will be online, hopefully new information will appear.

Kċre Hi!

Do you know of anywhere that there are Photos of the old farming areas like those mentioned in Arnvid Lillehamers books? They are not in any of our local libraries. are there any on-line sources for photos? I Have looked in the digital archive photo section but not found any for the areas I have been researching.

It looks like beeing much easier to find people from 1700-1800 than to get photos from the old farming area/farms.

Try this map, write "Kavalvċg bygd" or "Avaldsnes" on top and press SĜK.

Kart means map, Foto means Photo, zoom in or out.
"Skjul topp", Skjul meny" means hide.

Good luck.

I have been looking for Norwegain shipwrecks on the SA coast particularly Algoa Bay and have found one that would fit the time frame. The Norwegain bark the "Stella" of 383 tons carrying a cargo of timber from Boston USA was wrecked on 18 Sept 1876 in a SE storm. If Omund (Amund) Rasmusen was a sailor on this ship he would have had time to move into the interior and find a wife. His first son Amund Reinard was born 4 1/2 years after this shipwreck.

There were many Norwegain ships that sailed the SA waters and many were wrecked but this is the only one that fits the time frame. That is if the family legend of shipwreck is true. In earlier posts I was looking for the Norman but all the ships called the Norman did not fit the time frame.

From Omund (Amund) seamans logbook the last entry is in 1870. The question is how were the logbooks filled in. Were they filled in only when the sailor signed off on the completion of his time aboard? or were they supposed to be filled in when signing on and off? Looking at the entries in his log the last entry is a signing off.

I have been looking at various databases but have not found one that gives the sailings of ships but it seems as if there is information on passenger ships but not cargo ships. Anyone know if such information is available? I know this is a long shot particularly as the Norwegians had the 4th largest fleet of merchant ships in the world in that era.

Hi Neville, I have searched internet for the information you asked for, but wasn´t able to find anything.
Likely this kind of information is kept in the archives, to get it online is depending on volunteers in various historian assosiations for seamen.
