I am attempting to find more information about my ancestors Østen Syversen and his wife Mari Pedersdatter. They are mentioned at:
http://www.bredebygden.com/Garder/Sandbu/gamleplassen.html
as the parents of my ancestor Marit Østensdatter. I think I have their marriage record Vågå 1739 - 1810 page 103 2nd column # 6. I think I have Marit's birth. Same book page 47, 2nd column, 2nd from bottom. I did a census search (1801) and found two Østens both too young. I found a Mari, I think living with her son Peder, age 66. She would have been a 17 year old bride in 1752. Possible but I did not think likely. I could not find a birth record for Peder. I did find the death of a more age appropriate Mari Pedersdatter. Same book page 200 4th column # 21, she was 86 years old. Is there any indication this is my Mari Pedersdatter? I have not been able to find the death record for any Østen Syversen
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, Marit Østensdatter was bapt. July 24 1763, see next to the last record, right column on left page I don't believe that the Mari Pedersdatter, burried in 1805, 86 years old was your Mari. If you look up the 1801 census you find that her husband was Peder Pedersen and that she had not been married before.

Did you find them mentioned in either "Bygdebok for Vågå og Sel", multiple volumes by Ivar Teigum; or "I gamle Daagaa : forteljingo og bydga-minne fraa Vaagaa", by Ivar Kleiven?

Thank you both for your response. I know of the book by Ivar Teigum but have not heard of the one by Ivar Kleiven. I would be interested in purchasing one or both but do not know how to do it from the USA. Any Suggestions?

For the book by Ivar Kleiven see again World Cat
There appear to be several libraries with the book, getting to the library may be a challenge. I did not find anywhere that sells this book. |

Hi Marlon, I think perhaps Østen Syversen and Mari Pedersdatter died before 1801 since they are not recorded in the census. They engaged Nov. 7. 1751 and married Feb. 13. 1752 as you pointed out, 2. column 6. couple here.
I found a Østen Syversen, he died1790 age 83, the funeral was on October, left column line 14 from top: oct Østen Syversen 83, here

Many US libraries participate in the Inter-Library Loan program and will usually loan their books to other libraries in that program. Check with your local public library to see if they can borrow the book(s) for you.
The Inter-Library Loan program is explained in the collection of "How-To" articles recommended under "Links" above. Here is a link to the helpful articles written by John Follesdal. Articles from Ancestors From Norway
You can also look online for other persons who have the book(s) or have access to them and who have volunteered to do limited lookups for others. Norwegian Research Sources Norway Lister Lookups

A likely candidate for your Østen Syversen could be the one who in 1736 was 12 years old reciding on Rye, see last record on right page He would have been 28 years if he was the one who married in 1752.

That was an interseting finding Einar.
Østen Syversen married Mari Østensdatter from Ryen (Ro), Ryen was one farm and 4 subfarms in 1801, perhaps they both came from Ryen.
Could Widow Mari Pedersdatter age 66 be a your Mari, " Har Føderaad" former owner, living on Ryen 1801, her son Peder Østensen owned the farm, married to Imbjør Olsdatter

Thanks to all who are responding.. Yes, the Østen Syversen from Rye seems a good candidate.
I am confused about Østen Syversen and Kari Østensdatter from Ryen (Ro)
I saw that Mari Pedersdatter age 66. I thought she too young for my Mari Pedersdatter.
Are Ryen (Ro) and Rye the same?
I will be away from my computer for a few days so if I do not respond it is not because I am being rude,

Hi, Rye, Ryen and Ro are divergent spellings for the same farm in Hedalen in Vågå.
Hedal/Heidal was a former sub parish in Vågå, From 1965 Hedal became a part of Sel municipality.

Copy of Heidal church where Kari Pedersdatter Rye was christened, the old church burned 1933.
Peder Østensen on Ryen in the 1801 census was 45 years old. Østen Syversen had a son Peder born 1755, christened Festum Johannes Baptisae, Midsummerday, Tuesday 24, 2 column 2 baptism from bottom. Fest: Joh: Bap: Østen Siversen Peder, here

I wrongspelled Mari as Kari abowe, sorry for the confusion, I have corrected it.
In the 1801 census for Ryen Syver Østensen age 43 lived as a cottager on Ryen married to Anne Ellefsdatter with three children and a foster daughter Ragnild age 12. This fram was registered as a sub farm under Ryen, could be Syver´s inherit from his mother.
Østen Syversen got a son Syver Østensen christened Sept. 6. 1758, right column 2. from top, see here
idem (same day as abowe) Østen Syversen: Siver
Then Mari Pedersdatter was about 16 when she married in 1751 and about 20 when Peder was born in 1755. I have seen young brides at age 15-16 a few times before in the 1700 records, likely an apply for exemption had to be done.

Thanks to all who have responded. I am almost convinced that the Mari Pedersdatter living with her son Peder in the 1801 census is the correct Mari but I have a question. According to what Kåre has found Peder was the first son and Syver the second. Shouldn't the first son have been named Syver and the second Peder? Or maybe there was an earlier Syver who died.
Also could I get a translation of the meaning of that 1736 record of Østen when he was 12 years old.
Again thanks to all for your hard work.

Hi, You are right, according traditional naming first born son should have been Syver. Traditiional naming wasn´t always for some reasons kept. When I saw that I thought perhaps Syver I could have died young and Syver born 1758 could have been Syver II.
The 1736 census for young and unmarried from age 7-40 in Vågå is from the Honourable Bishop´s visit June 21. 828 Østen Syversen Rye age 12 chapter F(How does she/he read) Starts to learn Chapter G (How much does she/he read from the Catechism) 1P: and "Bordlesing" simulare to a verse song before eating in school Chapter H (Civil status) Son
If you take a look here, right page 9. from top, you will see Steener Syversen Rye age 25, son, he is most likley Østens brother
