Hi it is unknown to my aunt and uncles that lena spelt her name RIAN OR RYAN. They knew that in norway they used the I for the Y. Her birthdate is march 18, 1863. I 've been told she may have spelt her name Rian and then when she arrived to the states they ( immigration board spelt it ryan.) I have been told she came from either Bergen or T rodheim. Her death certificate lists her last name as Lena Ryan Olson. A marriage
certificate that I've located said Oline Ryan and Morris Oleson in 1881. Both found in Minneasota.

Now in Nord Trodenlag we found a matching birthdate with the matching last name "Ryan" (Ryanpladds). Which I thought would be her. I also was told that when she left Norway she left with a younger brother. I was wondering if some one could help
me verify her birthdate once and for all or direct me in the right direction on where to start.

Thanks KIM

Immigration board? What was that? Where? Most importantly, WHEN immigrated?

As well Ryan and Rian are Norwegian farm names.
Lina could well be Oline.

Oline #10 born March. 18. 1863 as you found on Ryanplads, Henning sub parish in Sparbu parish looks promising. Two of the godparents were from Ryan. She was born to Ole Kristofersen and Anna Larsdatter.

Oline had three older siblings, Lina, Svend and Loretz living on farm Finesset in 1865. Does any of these names sounds known to you?

The records for Henning /Sparbue, exept for the heading, in English if you want to make lookups for emigrants here

Oline Olsdatter (18) from Sparboen leaving Trondheim on 04 MAR 1881. Destination reads Watertown Dakota. Her ticket is paid in America. She looks to be travelling with Martin Andreassen (23), also from Sparboen.

I guess there wasn't any immigration board. Maybe the police or somebody that writing down names as they came or couldn't understand the slang at the time. I believe she immigrated about 1879 or so according to the 1920 census.

Kare - I do have all the information from the 1865 census. from Sparbu. Her older siblings only sound familiar just through doing research in the archives. Lena never talked about her family to my aunt and uncle. They were pretty much closed lip . I would like to believe that this is her but what if her last name was RIAN then.

The baptismal record for Oline Olsdatter born March 18 1863, is #10 she was baptized at home and this was confirmed in church Aug 16.
her parents were Ole Kristofersen and Anne Larsdatter. In the 1865 census the family were living at Finĉsset.
Oline was confirmed Sept 22 1878, see #95 and in Febr 1881 she moved out of Sparbu to go to Amerika, see #3

I understand you will be absolutely 100 % sure.

I can´t believe there could be two Oline /Lena Ryan (Rian) born March 18. 1863.
Lena and Lina was often used in the everyday speech for Oline and she had a sister Lina.

Farm Rian is located to Bĝrsa parish, Sĝr Trĝndelag County, same county as for Sparbu. It was 88 persons living on 16 farms named Rian in 1865, no interesting candidate born March 18. 1863.

Kim.
She had a brother Lorentz born on Ryanplads April 8. 1860.
You mentioned she emigrated with a younger brother, I can´t find a younger brother.

Lorentz Ryan age 27 from Sparbu emigrated 1887 to Minneapolis, Minnesota on ship Hero with two other boys from one of the Ryan farms.

Emigrants from Ryanplads (a sub farm under Ryan) would use Ryan in the emigration records.

Of course Sparbu is Nord Trĝndelag, it was a wrongspelling.

The Norwegian pronunciation of Ryan and Rian is very similar.

RYAN; R - Y (ee in knee) A - (a in bar) - N
RIAN; R- I (ee in bee) A (a in bar) - N

Hi I concluded that Martin Andraessenn might be a uncle that left at the same time. When I had Oline birthrecord translated there was a bunch of Andreassen's listed . Would you agree? He also came from the subfarm Ryanplads.

Martin Andreassen isn´t easy to find, Sparbu, todays Steinkjer town and municipality, consisted of several sub parish´s in 1865.
Oline was born in Henning sub parish in Sparbu, north-east from Trondheim.

You are right, it was two Andreasen daughters among Olines godparents. One of them, Resine Andreasdatter was married to Bastian Svendsen Ryan.
Any relationship between Martin and Oline is to early to tell.

You are almost right about Marthin Andreassen, he was Oline´s cousin.
He was born in Henning sub parish in Sparbu, todays Steinkjer on Jan. 4. 1848 to Andreas Zakariasen and Ingeborg Kristofersdatter.

The family on Bremsetplads in 1865.

Martin´s mother Ingeborg Kristofersdatter was Ole Kristofersen´s older sister, she was born June 29. 1810 to Christopher Larsen Ryan-aunet and Berith Olsdatter, right page 3. from bottom here

Ole Kristofersen was born to Christopher Larsen Ryan-aunet and Berith Olsdatter April 20. 1819, left page #2

Christopher Larsen, servant, age 24, "Ugift" not married, National soldier, and Berit Olsdatter, servant, age 17, on Ryan 1801.
Christpher was enlisted soldier in 1. Nationale Batallion, Trondhjemske Regiment.

Andreas Zakariassen age 2 in 1801 could have been Martin´s father if it wasn´t for his age, he was 55 in 1865

Wow and a big thankyou!!!! I wasn't expecting all of this but it does help break things down. I also agree Andreas Zakariassen he was just a baby at the time of the 1801 census. . Do you have any brilliant ideas on where to search for when people died. I've been looking through 1875 census to see if i could find Oline's parents but having no luck. Help. Thanks Kim

I dont have any brilliant ideas Kim, sorry, only hard work, page after page to investigate.
The records from the last part of the 1800 is difficult to understand becaus of the priests indistinct handwring. Well, he had no reason to believe we should be wondering about that 130 years later.

Olines mother Anne Larsdatter, widow born 1823 still lived in 1900 on the same farm as in 1865, Finĉset.
Olines brother Svend Olsen "owned" the farm as a cottager, he was a black-smith and lived temporary in Steinkjer town by Mathiesen, married to Oline and three daughters.
