I have a family history that refers to The Thirty Year War and the Battle of Longer.
The only official references to the the Thirty Year War I've found indicates the years 1618-1648.
Was Norway invovled another conflict in the time span 1785-1800? |

Have you already checked at Wikipedia? and exhausted the information they list there?
I just ran the simple words 'Norway wars' through my favorite search engine and the Internet results were many.
Don't forget that Norway was part of the Danish Kingdom for hundreds of years until 1814. |

I did a Google and Wikipedia used showed the 1618-1648 inn reference to the 30 year war which were interesting but outside the lifespan of the individual I'm researching. Most of the war references that pop up were WWII and a few WWi.
I admit my knowledge of Norwegian history is lacking. I was hoping someone might have a key phase that might know of a war at in that timeframe by another name. Like we call our Civil war, is often referred to War Bewteen the States or the War of Secession
I was hoping to understand this footnote in an old history and put it into perspective |

There is a book on line called "History of the Norwegian people" By Knut Gjerset, you can look it up at google books. I am not up on Norwegian history, but this book gives some good information.
Maybe it can help bring you closer to what your looking for? |

The Thirty Year War was mostly a "continental" war, but the Kingdom Denmark-Norway did participate between 1625 and 1630.
In 1788, Norway tried to invade Sweden, in what is later known as the "Cowberry war" (Tyttebærkrigen). The crusade was of very little success, and the soldiers had to survive on what the forest had to offer; thus the name. Out of 10 000 Norwegian soldiers, only 8 where killed in action. However, between 1500 and 3000 died later of illness caused by lack of food, bad weather, poor clothes and poor sanitary conditions.
Between 1800 and 1815, Denmark-Norway participated in the Napoleon wars.

Btw; what reference do you have to the "Battle of Longer"? I could not find any information about such a battle...
Or did you mean the Battle of Lyngør, a sea-battle between the Danish-Norwegian navy and the British, at Lyngør harbour on July 6th, 1812?

There are two letters (one from a great great uncle) that states his great grand father faught in the battle of Linger. This letter isn't the original and a few items were slightly off (for instances Fie became Tie). The other letter was in the hands of a different branch but states close to the same story but states the Battle of Longer. I think the Battle of Lyngør sound like a likely candidate.

Hi Mary, I have family from Lyngør, and extensive knowledge about both available litterature about the Battle of Lyngør, and the families of Lyngør during the past 400 years. If you send me an e-mail with some information of the names of your ancestors, I am sure I can help you with the biography of your Norwegian ancestors.
