Ragnild Simensd Berge Korsan traveled from Vaga, Oppland to Trondheim in 1833. Would she have had to walk? Was there any mode of transportation? |

Ragnild was baptized May 29 1814, see middle of left page - father Simen Berge. Ragnilds parents were married Nov 3 1808, see 5th record in far right column. Their first child was baptized Ragnild March 26 1809, see right page she must have died before 1814 then. Simon Olsen was baptized Nov 22 1772, see right column on left page, last record in 1772 Brith Syversdatter was baptized Jan 16 1785, see 2nd record in right column on left page. Her father was Syver Knudsen. If you can find Ragnilds record for moving into Trondheim it might give you some info. Simon Olsens brother Jacob was baptized July 29 1770, see 8th record in far right column.

FamilySearch had quote: SIMON OLSEN Christening: 22 NOV 1772 Vaagaa, Oppland, Norway Parents: Father: OLE BERGET
Using that, this might be Simon's birth record Baptism Vågå 1772 |

There was notable northern migration in Norway about that time and later. The northern areas were far more sparsely populated and many felt that opportunities were thereby increased. I've personally followed the histories of a few families who moved to far northern areas of Norway first and then later took the larger, more drastic step to cross the Atlantic to an entirely unknown future in a foreign land.
It was probably a little like being in America and heeding the call to "Go west young man, go west". It must have taken immense courage to completely leave home behind for parts unknown.
Speculation on my part, but that is what you asked for. |

Ragnilg Simonsdatter came from the farm Zveen (=Svee) in Vågå, same farm as given when she moved out of Vågå, dated Aug 22 1833. Moving in to Trondheim is dated approx half a year later, March 12 1834, her intention was to work in Trondheim, she came from Vågå parish and was born in Vågå parish. She was going to live with small grocer Steen (probably where she would work) and she brought along attestation from pastor Krog.

Ragnilds intention was "Ligesaa" (the same - referring to the above) "Søger Tjeneste" - (looking for work), she came from "Fruesogn" (Vår frue parish) and was born in "Vaage Prg" (Vaage parish), she would be staying "hos Consul Gram" - (with Consul Gram), attestation was from the minister in Støren. |

When Ragnild is recorded in Kristiansund in 1842 (she moved in 1840) it says she is from "Sveen eller Berge", that she is looking for "Tjeneste" (work) and came "fra Thjem" - fra Trondhjem (from Trondheim), she was going to stay in "Chsund" - Christiansund (Kristiansund) and brought with her the two attestations mentioned earlier.

I don't know if you have seen the confirmation record for Ragnilds son Severin Olaus, but anyhow it's here he was born out of wedlock July 14 1846 and baptized June 6 1847. His father Peder Olsen Korsan was then a widower. |

The distance from Vågå to Trondheim was of course considerable. (Aprox 160 miles) I do not know details on such a travel, but assume she had to do some walking. Farmers along the way also were obliged to furnish horse transport, mostly for more prominent people, but also for others when there was a need. In the periode 1847 - 1851 detailed maps on the roads in Norway were issued and transport possibilities improved. |
