Hello,

My relatives, Ole C. Malterud and family, left Oslo on April 7, 1882 on the ship named "Rollo". I am trying to figure out what ship they traveled on after arriving in Hull, England. They state on citizenship papers that they arrived at Portland, ME on May 1, 1882 but I cannot locate any ships that went to that port on May 1.

Would anyone be able to tell me if sometimes the ships just made random stops along the way or if the database is incomplete?

Thank you,
Mike

No database is complete, the Norway Heritage arrivals list is based on what was reported in Norwegian newspapers.

I can't make the link to the Oslo records but you will note that their destination was Quebec and the line was the Norge line.

They were scheduled to travel to Quebec, their first place of arrival "into the U.S". was Portland, Maine. Making a stop at Portland before going onto Quebec seems out of the way for the route to Quebec. Time was money and the Captains traveled as fast as they safely could, there may have been a reason for the diversion.

If you Google - Portland Maine passenger lists - you will note that there is a 20 year gap in available passenger lists up to 1893 which includes 1882.

You can also view the information on the Norge line on Norway Heritage. I would suggest you try to find them in the online Canadian passenger lists, you have the exact dates to eliminate that possibility.

Hi Jo Anne,

Thanks for the note. Their destination says "Fargo", which makes sense since they lived there. I didn't see where it said Quebec.

Norway Heritage db says the Rollo was on the Wilson Line, but the passenger list says A. Sharpe. I was wondering where you saw Norge line?

I thought that they most likely took a train from Portland to Fargo.

Thank you,
Mike
