Does anyone know how they would have recorded the death of a Norwegian citizen lost at sea?
Would this have been done in their local Parish Register by a relative, or is there a particular archive for Norwegians who died abroad?
I am looking at the period of 1890-1910?
Thanks for all help and advice |

Hi,
I don't know if there are particular rules & regulations about recording deaths at sea, but I have seen in the registers for Dønna and Alstahaug in Nordland that funerals were held for sailors / fisherman lost at sea who were from those parishes and whose remains were not found.

Bernt Hansen, a brother of my grandfather was on board a ship that left Demarara, Guyana 24 Nov 1896, heading for Qeenstown, NZ. Nothing more was ever heard from the ship. 1897 he is in the Mandal chuch records of deaths after nr 16 Date of death: 1896/97, Burial: - -, ceremony - - To the right there is a column for when the death was reported to authoriities (skifteretten/Lensmannen).In this case 18 Jun 1897. The skipper on board, his uncle Bent Laland, is listed on top of the same page. His widow, Bernhardine was in the 1900 census listed as a wife (not a widow). Perhaps she was still waiting - |

If they knew a person were lost on the sea they were recorded in the church books. Strange you should mention Dønna Jackie, my grandfather lived there as a fisherman all his life. He told me that almost "every" family along the coast had lost a familymember on the sea, either as a sailor or a fisherman.
Here is how it could be recorded when the dead never was found, it´s a 27 years old sailor form Dønna lost in the sea 1892.
Date of death unknown. Date of the funeral "ikke" not held Unmarried Sailor Herman Andreas Hansen Aakerø (Åkerøy) ...see 6. column right side: "omkommet ved Galeas Svanens totale forlis i den Engelske Kanal Vinteren 1891-1892" Died when the Galeas Swan was totally shipwrecked in the English Channel winter 1891-1892.
Next column: No doctor sommoned" , see #8

It seems the Sea is a harsh mistress, also. |

Thank you very much for all the information. I shall keep going through the church records. Perhaps I had not gone far enough forward after the ship had wrecked. You are all so helpful :-) |
