I am looking for information regarding my Grandmother, Sophia Berntine Kvittem. I am not sure of the spelling of her last name.
She was born in Norway on August 7, 1891, traveled to USA when she was about 17 years old and lived as a housekeeper in Sisseton, South Dakota. She latered married my Grandfather, Oscar Jamesgaard, lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota where they had two sons, Alvin and Donald.

I am beginning my search for the place of her birth, other family members, when she came to America, etc. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

She was from Kvittem in Nedre (Lower) Stjørdalen in Nord-Trøndelag county .

Her name spelled Soffie Bertine Johansdatter (her father was Johan), she was recorded as a servant maid on Kvittem Vestre (Western) in 1900.
She was born out of wedloc to maid Mette Bersvensdatter b. 1854 and bachelor Johan Hansen b. 1854 on farm Huseby, baptised Sofie Bertine in Værnes church on Sept. 20, see down page #33

Searched the 1900 Norwegian census for a given name starting with "So" and containing the letter "i", residing on a farm which starts with the letters "Kv" and containing "t".

Results -- in Stjørdal, Nord-Trøndelag lives the family of Johan Kvittem on the Kvittem vestre farm, "Soffie" is listed as a servant/hired girl. (There may be problems with some of the information in this particular part of the census?)
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&knr=1714&kenr=014&bnr=0001&lnr=00

The census indicates that her birth/baptismal record will probably be found in the parish books for Nedre Stjørdal.

The closest port of departure from Stjørdal and Nord-Trøndelag would be the port city of Trondheim. For an emigration record we check the databases of the Digitalarkivet website.
She sails from the port of Trondheim on or about 25 April 1911, listed with a different patronymic that was given in the census.

It may be of interest to see the published history/genealogy books about the Stjørdal area (notice the name of one of the authors):
"Stjørdalsboka: Gards- og slektshistorie", 6? volumes by Jon Lierfall. "Stjørdalsboka Index" by Owen J. Kvittem.

Yes, she was born in Nedre Stjørdal as indicated in the census (not indicated on the census was that she was born out of wedlock). See record #33
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5333&idx_id=5333&uid=ny&idx_side=-82

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -

Happy hunting!

Sofie Bertine used her fathers last name Hansen when she was confirmatied Sept. 30. 1906 in Værnes church.

She was born on Husebyaunet and lived on Kvittem. Parents unmarried farmworker Johan Hansen and maid Mette Bersvensdatter, see #26

She emigrated April 25. 1911 as Sofie Bertine Hansen, see lower part right page #12

Stjørdal, Vernes and Hegra in Nord-Trøndelag County is close to the border of Sør-Trøndelag County and Trondheim town.

Here is one candidate from Ancestry.com. Her father is listed as Johan Hansen and her destination as Elbow Lake. Her country is listed as Norway and town as Syndalen? Actually when you look at the original manifest I would read the town as Stjordalen.

The person directly below her is Sigrid Sofie Olsen also from Stjordalen and going to Minneapolis and 21 years old.

Name: Sofri Berntun Hansen
Arrival Date: 11 May 1911
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1892
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Southampton, England
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Scandinavian
Ship Name: Adriatic
Search Ship Database: View the Adriatic in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
NATIVITY: Norway
