Thanks to you I have Niels Andersen Stedje married to three Torkild Erichsen daughters (Sigid,Guri,Onni) and to Christi Olsdatter. You have identified the following children: Erik Nielson, Guri (died), Onni, Gjertrud, Guri,(died @5 yrs), Christi, twins Niels and Ole (died @ 2yrs),Guri. Are there any further children? I have a confirmation for an Anders Nielson Stedje(14 June 1818) He would have been born about 1804--how would that fit in, or does it?

Do you have any information on the parents of Niels Anderson? He was 56 years old in 1801 per census. He would have been born about 1745. Were his parents also farmers living on the farm? Since they didn't seem to be cotters, would that mean that some land was in the family and that they probably farmed on Stedje in addition to their own land? Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you. Lue

In my posting 03/11/2009 : 19:20:00 I said that Guri Torkildsdatter, Stedje who died 1813 was most likely Niels Andersens 1st wife. There was no evidence of this. In the 1801 census Niels Andersens wife was Sigri Torkildsdatter. They were engaged to be married Sept 17 1800, see top of right page
They were married Oct 23 1800, see left page
Niels and Sigri baptized Anders Jan 22 1803, see last record on right page
Jan 13 1805 they baptized Sigri, see left page
The mother Sigri died in childbed and was burried Jan 17, see right page

- I read his age in the 1801 census to be 30 years, i.e. born approx 1770.
In 1776 records were made of the persons living at the different farms with info including their ability to read.
For the Stedje farm here we find Niels Andersen in the 5th column (for children and servants) 5 years old. In the second column we find his grandfather Niels Andersen 70 years old and his grandmother Gutlou Sørensdatter 74 years old. Then follow his father Anders Nielsen 34 years old and his mother Britha Eriksdatter 27 years old.
The following persons are his uncle Erich Nielsen 31 years old and aunt Giertrud Erichsdatter - who had a son Niels Erichsen 8 years old.
The other persons do not belong to Niels Andersens family a far as I can see.

- I am afraid I don't have any information to answer your questions.

Which ones could read and which ones couldn't?
There is no mention of Neils Andersen (the 5 year old) parents?
Thanks, Lue

Maybe my description was not clear enough, the 3rd and 4th names described as "Then follow his father Anders Nielsen 34 years old and his mother Britha Eriksdatter 27 years old" - i.e. the 5 year old Niels parents!

Einar,
The misunderstanding is mine and thank you for clearing it up. Maybe you can answer these questions:
1. On page 39 for Guri Torkildsdatter, Stedje, she was buried on 5 March 1813. Do we know why she died?
2. If she died in childbirth/childbed, was the child identified?
3. On page 158 child Guri Nielsen died on 20 Dec 1826. Do we know why she died?
4. On page 245 #6, gives Erik Nielson/Kari Johannesdatter marriage date 12 Apr 1853 and child Niels is born 16 May 1853--see page 76 #66. Does this indicate that Kari was 8 months pregnant at her wedding? Was this common at this time? Was this possibly Night-Wooing?
Thank you very much

1. No cause of death given for Guri Torkildsdatter, Stedje, since she gave birth to Anna who was bapticed Febr 20 (see on page 38 right side) and Guri was buried March 5, it's reasonable to guess that she died due to the childbirth.
2. Anna, see page 38.
3. Guri Nielsen died on 20 Dec 1826. No cause of death given.
4. Yes Kari was 8 months pregnant at the wedding, a little bit late to be called common. Was this possibly Night-Wooing? I would not know, they did not tell me.
