My grandfather left Christiania around 1905-1910. I have little information to start my search other than his name and date of birth, Caesar Johan Backe, b. 14 Aug 1891, that he born in or around Christiania, and his parents names are Carl Johan Backe and Jesnine Nilsen (unsure of some of the spellings).
He said his father, Carl, was Master of a merchant sailing vessel, and they made trade runs to USA. I am hoping to be able to find information on the vessel and it's voyages as well as background on my ancestors.
Any help on where to start searching will be very appreciated. |

| There is quite a bit of information on the Family Tree part of Ancestry.com belonging to "boxtranch1" on Caesar Johan Backe as well as his family. Are you the owner of that posting or are you familar with it. One interesting part of that website is the information that the sister of Caesar Johan Backe was from Lillehammrer. |

That film number given on the LDS website would indicate that the original birth/christening record should be found in
Petrus menighet i Oslo' (Peter's parish in Oslo). The film description would lead you to expect that the birth/christening was 'dissentere' (dissenter). |

The baptismal record for Cæsar Johan is #113 which shows his father as bachelor Karl Johan Jensen Bakke (born 1864) and maiden Jensine Emilie Nielsen (born 1861). The fathers profession is said to be a scrap merchant with business in Raadhusgaden by the Fish pier. The mother was working at a clothes shop if I read it correctly.
Cæsar Johan was their second child born out of wedlock.

Oh my! I though coming back after only two days looking for responses was optimistic!
lyndal40, yes, that Ancestry.com tree is my sister's, she's been working mostly on other branches, and I've started to try to help her with it.

Now I've almost recovered from the glee of seeing your responses, and have reread them in the order they were posted. If I may impose on your kindness a bit more, can you tell me whether all three of you got the information from LDS? Is the baptismal record #113 from Peter's paris in Oslo? And what might the description of 'dissentere' (dissenter) indicate?

The scanned image linked is at the Digitalarkivet website. Dissenter is an English word (dissentere in Norwegian) which means a person who dissents, a non-member of the congregation.
My brief look at the LDS catalog entry for film #1282970 had led me to think the birth/christening would probably be in the pages for 'dissentere' in the Peter's parish book for the time period 1888-1895 but that library catalog detail also lists just a few lines later that regular birth/baptisms are also included in that book. The link to the actual page (70) above is NOT from the 'dissentere' section of that book. So the child was baptised into the state church of Norway.
The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].
