Hi,

A quick check at www.genealogybank.com found 180 Soderlund (8 obits, 3 marriages, the rest news articles, advertisments, etc.) mentions in the Minnesota newspapers in the Historical Newspapers section.

Of possible interest is the obituary for Jacob A. Soderlund from the Duluth paper dated 8 Nov 1917. Jacob is characterized as age 69, survived by 4 sons and three daughters, Jacob was living with one of his sons named Casper Soderlund of Brimson, Minnesota at the time of his death. There is also a
mortuary notice for Mrs. Anna Gurine Soderlund in the Duluth News Tribune of 7 Jan 1909. No other details given in the free look.

You only get a part of the article for free at this site the whole article if you take a membership.

If you find that you want a copy of this whole article a temporary month long membership is one of the site's options (about a $10 charge)

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Hi,

At familysearch.org there is a Jacob Andreas Soderlund in the Pedigree Resource File. His birthyear is given as 1847 and place as Hammerfest, Finnmark, Norway. He married in 1879 at Stjordal, Nord Trondelag, Norway to Anne Gurine Torsteinsdatter Husby who was born at Stjordal, Nord Trondelag.

In the death indexes at the St. Louis county, Minnesota, www.usgenweb.com page there is an Anne Gurine Soderlund who died in 1909 and a Jacob Andrew Soderlund who died 5 Nov 1917, (and several other Soderlunds as well.)

lyndal40: Do you see if these people live in the same neighborhood in Duluth, St Louis, MN (census-1910)?

As shown above Jacob, Caspar, and Arvid live in the same household as a three geneational family in Duluth, St Louis, District 8 Ward 192.

John (Johan) Soderland lives nearby in a rooming house in Duluth, St Louis, District 8, Ward 193

This Jacob is Norwegian, and emigrated from Trondheim on May 19th, 1904 as Jacob Andreas Fredriks. Søderlund.
Here he is in census-1900 for farm Nardo in Nedre Stjørdalen, Nord-Trøndelag.
Jacob is born in Hammerfest, Finnmark. Profession is baker.

Here he is in census-1865 for Hammerfest , Finnmark.
His parents are Skipper Petter Magnus Søderlund born abt 1822 in Sweden and Caroline Christine born abt 1828 in Trondheim.

From what I can see; Jacob Andreas Søderlund & wife Anna had at least these children:

Casper Søderlund b 1880 Kristiansund
Thormod Søderlund b 1882 Trondheim
Sigrid Søderlund b 1884 Trondheim
Karoline Kristine Søderlund b 1886 Trondheim

2 sons and 2 daughters. So there should be two more sons, and one daughter. Hopefully; Johan Marius are one of the two missing sons...

Hi,

In the Minnesota Naturalization Records at the Iron Range Interpretive center, there are both a John Soderlund(2 entries one given as Yohn!) and a Johan Soderlund ( 2 entries) each in St. Louis county/ Duluth, Minnesota.

The John Soderlund may the age 60 John Soderlund in the news story at genealogybank.com in an article from the 1908 Duluth newspaper about his accidentally ingesting poison while working in the Hines lumber camp.

There is also a Soderlund page at www.genforum.com which you may want to join. It's free!

Just to be aware of:
A final proof of evidence that connect Johan Marius Soderlund to Jacob Andreas Fredriks. Søderlund and his family have so far not been found. There are some strong indications that Jacob is his father, but so far it's only a calculated "guess"...

Hi,

Just a few misc. notes...

The Rowberg file had two Sonderlund obits. One for Jacob Andreas Sønderlund a member of the Sons of Norway, Fram #5 of West Duluth. It says that he was born 8 Nov 1847 in Hammerfest. None of his surviving children are named not even the son it says he lives with, but that all his children are in America (or North America?)--her i Landet. His services were held from Our Saviour's Lutheran church in Duluth.

The other obit is of Mrs. Anna Sonderlund the widow of Casper Sonderlund. Her survivors listed are Mrs. Daniel Elder of Duluth and Mrs. Gladys T Pekkala of Hawthorne California +10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Her service was also at Our Savior's in Duluth.

The Border crossing records at Ancestry have one interesting listing of a Jacob Sonderland born Norway, age 66 who came into Canada via the North Portal, Saskatchewan from Michigan to Swift Current on 9 April 1913.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

I wonder if Jacob came to visit Johan, cause Swift Current is just North of Bracken where Johan homesteaded. Swift Current also had the Railroad sevice.

Hi,

Corrected typos and added info to my previous. Yes, Lynda that Jacob. Thanks for help with that. This might represent one of the "invisible threads" that tie people together. You still don't know if Jacob is father or brother or some other type of relationship or no relationship at all.

Wayne, was there a death certificate issued for Johan in abt 1942 which contained his parents' names?

Hilsen,
Jackie
