Hello,
Just got into looking for my birth family. While I do have limited resources for information (seperated from by blood family when little, but do know a few names) I was wondering how to start looking.
What I have is...and this is the sum total,
Sam and Laura Larsen emmigrated from Bergen Norway with my grandfather Ludvick Ingolf Larsen, born Oct 28, 1925, when he was 5 years old. That would be Ship date 1920. He had a brother Arthur and a sister Ragna.
Not much to go on, but it's something. I am finding all of Ludvick's children here in the US. That doesnot seem to be hard, but would like info on how to start researching back from the ship date and info on how to find relatives/heritage in Norway.
TIA, Don

Don Jordan

Get his application for a Social Security Number. That application should give you more information about him. Social security death index lists him as born 28 Oct 1924, first obtained SSN in Illinois but last benefit was sent to state of Washington.
http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi?lastname=Larsen&firstname=Ludvik&nt=exact

Where his various children were born can also tell you where he was living at those times.

What document told you he emigrated from the port of Bergen?

Your years are a little confusing. If he was born in 1925 he could not have immigrated in 1920. Did you mean 1930. If so here is a possible candidate. He is travelling with his mother Laura and sister Ingeborg. No Sam.

Name: Ludvig Larsen Oppedal
Arrival Date: 18 Mar 1929
Estimated birth year: abt 1926
Age: 3
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Bergen, Norway
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Scandinavian
Ship Name: Stavangerfjord
Search Ship Database: Search the Stavangerfjord in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
NATIVITY: Norway

The orginal manifest found in Ancestry.com lists Laura and children's birth place and last residence as Brekke, Sogn.

Correction, the birth place of Ludvick is listed as Haus. Which could be the town of Haus not so far from Brekke, Sogn og Fjordane.

If you have any further informatin on the family, it could prove useful. Such as where did the family settle in the United States. Especially where did they live for the 1930 US Census and what name did Ludvick use.

Just an aside, on the above post. Haus and Oppedal are only abut 40 minutes apart.

Oh you guys are great and quick.

Hopkins: Great information, didn't know to look there. I don't know where his children were born. That will be something to ask the living relatives.

Lyndal: yes my addition was backwards. It should have been 1930's instead of 20's. It was "word of mouth" about emmigrating from Bergen. As far as I know there was no sister Ingeborg. He had a sister Ragna and a brother Arthur.

Ok...for more information. I just found Arthurs daughter today through other channels. I will be questioning her into the past living locations and anything else I can think of (any suggestions) and hopefully will get a telephone number for Arthur. Turns out he's still living and in Washington.

Thank you again, Don
