Researching my husband's family history. His g-grandfather homesteaded in Antelope Montana named Christian Arthur Olson, His son, Carl Arthur Olson married Nettie Modahl in 1916 in Culbertson Montana. Carl had a brother named Otto.
I've been told that "Olson" was originally "Kettleson/KIttleson"? They migrated to Minnesota and Nettie is buried I believe in Pelican Rapids?
Searching for any history on either Kittleson or Modahl.
Nettie came from Lars Modahl and Bertha Torkildson. Said she moved from Norway on a ship somewhere around 1909. |

My father-in-law says that there were too many Kettlesons, so that's why they changed their name to Olson...supposed it goes like this:
Ole Kettleson Christian Arthur Olson Arthur (Carl) Olson Conrad (my husband's dad) Chad Olson (my brother-in-law) Scott Olson (my husband)

The 1865 Norwegian census shows at least 62 men named Ole Kittelsen/Kittilsen (or the other expected spelling variations) from various parts of Norway that were born 20 or more years earlier than the son "Christian Arthur" and that are either still married in 1865 or widowed.
You could search through those various households and perhaps find a match for what you seek.

Read the instructions for those databases at that website and the database search wildcard most useful is the "%".

Census-1920 for Polk, Minnesota: Carl C Olson, b 1855, Norway Mathilda Olson, b 1860, Sweden Effie Olson, b 1898, Minnesota Melvin C Olson, b 1902, Minnesota
So who was "Christian Arthur Olson"? I believe this must be him: 1880: ?? 1900: Chris Olson, b July 1854 in Norway, imm 1871, married 1877. Fosston village, Polk, MN. 1910: Christian K Olson, b 1855 in Norway, imm 1871. Fosston, Polk, MN. 1920: Carl C Olson, b 1855 in Norway, imm 1871. Polk, MN.
First of all; I have not found any proof of that he homesteaded in Antelope Montana...? His son can be found in Sheridan, Montana in 1920: Carl A Olson, b 1889 in Minnesota Nettie Olson, b 1895 in Norway Lois Olson, b 1917 in Montana
But not his father? And what about his name? Christian Arthur? What are your sources for his name? He is listed as Chris, Christian K and Carl C in the census'es... What does the original census-images say about his middle name? And can he be found in the 1880-census? I have not been able to locate them. He married Mathilda ab. 1877.

A possibility for Census-1895 for Polk, MN: Chrestina Olson b 1855 Mathina Olson b 1860 Mary Olson b 1882 Carl Olson b 1889 Otto Olson b 1890

My gt. grandfather was Hans Kittelson , a brother to Ole Kittelson. Both came to Erhard's Grove townhip in OtterTail County, MN. Their children had similar names; Hans and Bertha's children were Christian Kittelson, Hannah Ouren, Anton Hans Kittelson and Gina Myhra. The children of Ole and Karen were Christian Olson, Helena Ohe, Hans Kittelson and Sophie (married to Aasness, then Ambers). Hans and Bertha have the name Bustul on their tombstone as that is where they lived in Norway. Ole's tombstone bears the Kittelson name. These are located at the Bagstevold Cemetery in Erhard's Grove. Christ Olson and Mathilda are buried at Central Swede Lutheran Church a few miles from Pelican Rapids, MN. Ole Kittelson married a second time as Karen died young. His second wife was a Mrs. Varberg, a widow. Ole and Hans came from Sandsvĉr in Buskerud County , Norway, near Kongsberg. Their mother, Sara, came also to America and is buried at the South Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. A committal service is noted in their records in June 1975 altho she died in Nov. 1874. |

Ole Kittilsen was from Bustul and Karen Hansdatter from Flata (Isaksplassen), a sub farm under Muggerud.
I have all the records for these people for you later.

Hans and Ole Kitilsen´s father Husmand (lease holder) Kittil Olsen Bustul died August 23. buried Sept. 6.1868, buried at the cemetery at Hedenstad church, see #64
Kittil Olsen´s widow Sara was Sara Hansdatter Tofstad, I cannot find her em. records, information tells she emigrated the same year, 1870, with the sons as she sold Bustul for 180 Spesiedaler to Ole Olsen Ormetangen, Kittil Olsen´s nephew.

Great info, CJ Tweeton! I think you solved the mystery! There's no doubt in my mind that the "Christian Arthur Olson" in this topic must be equal to (Carl) Christian Olson, son of Ole and Karen Kittelson. Carl Christian Olson and swedish wife Mathilda have a son named Carl Arthur Olson, born 1889.
