I am trying to find information about Gunder Wiblemo, and am not sure where is the best place to search. I have only a few facts. He was born in Mandal, Norway 12 Apr 1880. He emigrated to the U.S. from Kristiansand on a Thingvalla liner, arriving here about 1 April 1897. He first settled in Decorah, Iowa, then in Parker, SD. He remained in Parker until his death. Family tradition is that his surname before emigration was Aanensen or Amendsen or something that sounds like that.

I would like to know the name of his parents. I have located a family - Thor Wiblemo - living in Mandal today. They have no idea if we are related, and since I don't speak Norwegian, I'm not sure how to ask them the right questions.

Any suggestions where I should begin my search?

He was born on the Viblemo/Wiblemoe farm and baptised in Konsmo parish in Nord-Audnedal district of Vest-Agder.

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

The information was extracted and put into database form where the names of his parents and other details are easier to read -
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=7&filnamn=Dpkns26&gardpostnr=4099&sokefelt=skjul
(Note that the parents birth years and marriage date is included in that.)

The Kristiansand emigration register shows a Gunder Aanensen leaving in 1897 and heading for Iowa but lists him as married and born in 1847...

Ancestry.com shows that Gunder made several trips back to Norway. (1920 and 1950).
Unfortunately his application for US Passport didn't list his parents.

The Vest-Agder digital archives weren't of a format I'm familiar with so I didn't have luck there.

I did try the 1900 census and found the Wiblemo is a farm name. So it could well be that Gunder's Norwagian name was quite different. Going to the farm name was one of the common switches.

Try going into the New York Passenger List 1820-1957.
For Estimated birth year put 1800 +- 5 year Male
Ship Name Thingvalla
Arrival year 1897
The list will show 31 but only about 9 have an April 3 date.

His US Passport indicate he arrived about April 1, 1897.

Try finding a 1900 US or 1905 Iowa census. They might be a clue in a name transition.
There were two Wimblemo in 1905 iowa county of Winneshiek.

- the transcription of the birth date is wrong here, the parish record clearly shows April 12 1880.

The marriage record for his parents is #1. His father was 31 years old and born at Teland in Vigmostad. His mother wa 29 years old and born at Haaland in Konsmo.

The Konsmo records are also transcribed.
His father, Aanen Torjesen, died 30. Sept. 1888. Aanen Torjesen was a farmer (gardbruger) and a shop-keeper (landhandler).
His mother, Siri Abrahamsdatter, remarried 1898. Viblemo 1900 census. Siri died 1928.
I have a book, Norges bebyggelse 1955, showing that the farm house was 1932 sold to Amalie Haaland, born 1875, daughter of Simon and Maria (Abrahamsdatter) Haaland 1900 census. Maria was a sister of Siri.

You can learn a lot about your family, both back in time and forward in time from the farm history books Bygdebøker for an area. Audnedal has several books connected to it and depending upon where you live you can access them at a library, Family History Center, or sometimes obatin them through Interlibrary Loan. Here is a list of the ones available for Audnedal.

Aanen Torjesen Teland was born 15.07.1842. His father died Jan. 1843.
His parent's wedding was 21.06.1839. Tarjer had first been married to Aanen, Torje's brother 1827. Twice a widow, 49 yrs old, she married a very young man in 1855. But that seems to have ended with a divorce. She is listed as "f" in 1865, which I think means fraskilt = divorced 1865 census. Kristen is one of her 4 children in first marriage.

Tomine was married to Simon Evensen from Ertseid in Sør-Audnedal (Valle) in 1896. They were in Mandal in 1900 census.
Their third child Aanen was born 9. July 1900 Church record He probably died, because a second Aanen was born 20. Aug 1902 Church record. In 1902 Simon Evensen is listed as a "slagter" = butcher.

The brother of Simon, Ole Evensen, is a witness in baptism. He is on the Ertseid farm in 1900 census. The book Norges bebyggelse 1955 shows that a daughter of Ole Evensen, Elise Roland (1906-1994), is on the farm in 1955. She was married to Theodor Roland (1908-1981). Their dates of death are in the records Gravminner i Norge
The book shows two children on Ertseid, Anna Odlaug, born 1940, and Olav Tormod, born 1946. I have found no trace of them.

Abraham Aanensen Viblemo died as a bachelor in Molde 1897

Thorvald emigrated to Iowa 1891 and 1895

Confirmation Eivind Ertzeid 1910 and Aase Ertzeid 1912
Simon Ertseid was gardbruker (farmer) on Stykkene (today: Støkkan), a ground that today is in the middel of Mandal town.
