Gulbrand Eriksen Mørstad was born in Østre Slidre ca. 1830.

About 1856 he was given a death sentence for having made counterfeit money and for having murdered his companion. The sentence was subsequently changed to lifetime in prison. While in prison at Akershus castle, Christiania he was engaged in carving the two lion sculptures which can now be seen outside the Norwegian parliament building in Oslo. The work was done under supervision of the artist Christopher Borch.

In 1872 Mørstad was pardoned and released from prison. He later lived with his wife Ingeborg and son Erik in Christiania (Oslo). He worked as a wood carver.

On September 15th, 1881 he emigrated to America. He departed on the ship Dronning Louise (DFDS) for Copenhagen. I anticipate that he embarked on the S/S Harald at Copenhagen to sail for New York (arrival about 10 October 1881), as he had bought a ticket from the Thingvalla Line agent in Christiania. He was destined for Chicago, traveling alone. His son Erik still lived in Christiania in 1900. I find no more traces of his wife.

I am trying to help a friend finding information about Mørstad's life in America. He probably called him self Morstad. Variations of the first name may be Gulbrand, Gudbrand or Guldbrand. Any information would be most appreciated.

Unfortunately it appears that he died in 1888 in Chicago, Illinois, which is only a few years after he arrived in the United States.

MORSTAD, GULDBRAND E 1888-03-18 CHICAGO 53 YR U 00006790 COOK

A death certificate can be obtained by going to http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/deathsrch.html

Enter morstad in the "Name of Decendant" box and click on "Submit Query"

Doug, I thought so as well but the Gunder Morstad from Minnesota immigrated in 1871 and was married in 1864 so he does not really fit. I think Guldbrand E Morstad died in 1888 in Chicago.

- he was born out of wedlock Oct 20 1829, #76.
He married Ingeborg Olsdatter April 9 1854, #9 and they had Erik Aug 27 1855, #69.
Ingeborg was born Dec 7 1829, #5

One Ingeborg Ols. living in Kra. emigrated to New York in 1886, 56 years old and married. Could this be Gulbrands wife?

Thanks for all the information provided.

I think it is most likely that the Gulbrand Morstad I am looking for is the one listed in the Chicago death index 1888. Even though the age is a few years off. I should probably get a copy of that certificate.

The Ingeborg Ols. listed in the emigration records could be his wife, but it looks as if she is traveling along with 3 persons which might be her children. If that is the case it is probably not her.

I found Ingeborg Olsdatter Mørstad's death notice in the church records for the Paulus menighet in Oslo. She died May 20, 1878.

I have done a lot of research on Gulbrand Eriksen Mørstad and I am continuing to do more and I would very much like to communicate with anyone who is interested in him, his ancestors or descendents. He had one half sister plus several sister's and two brothers, one died shortly after he was born. Gulbrand is my grandfather's uncle. He did indeed go to Chicago in 1881 after his first wife Ingeborg died in Oslo (Paulus church record 1878) . He died in 1888 of TB (consumption) Cook County Chicago and his death certificate lists his occupation there as watchmaker and that he was married. His only son Erik remained in Norway. I can confirm that he did remarry in Chicago and that he is not the Gulbrand Eriksen Mørstad of Yellow Medicine County, Mn, even though 3 of his eldest sister Anne's children settled in that area.
