her parents were listed on the 1900 & 1910 census in chicago, il, as jens and karen berg (actually born karen trulsdatter & jens samuelsen).
however, her parents would have been about 54 and 58 respectively. so, i somehow doubt that.
i have a suspicion that she may have been a child of one of jens and karen's daughters, born out of wedlock.
the children of jens and karen berg are: ole & anna b 1862.12.11 oslo, norway caroline b 1865.08.30 oslo, norway ragnhild b 1869.06.13 oslo, norway robert b 1872.06 mn, usa
anna married ludwig kallak in 1885 and had 6 children. no idea what became of ole, but i suspect not a male. caroline married in 1904 and had a daughter (my ggrandmother) robert married ida johnson 1892 and had 10 children
i suspect ragnhild. i don't have any information about her marrying. it's just a hunch.
my ggrandmother refered to olive (ollie) as her cousin (which would be correct- but the census lists her as her grandparents daughter, ie her aunt).
i was hoping that there might be some descendants here who might know the story.
robert and anna both had large families, so i thought there might be some hope of finding their offspring.

Hi,
The Illinois State Archives has a couple of death index databases, pre 1916, and 1916-1950. In the 1916-1950 there appeared to be no Olive Berg, couple of Karen Berg, no Jens Berg, handful of Robert Berg, 1 Anna Kallak.
There is a Jens S. Berg in the pre-1916 db, age 70 died 28 Oct 1907 Cook County (but you say he's listed in the 1910 census so can't tell if this is your guy) Also 1 Rose Berg (no Ragnhild) age 73 d 1901 and 1 Ole Berg aged 46 d. 1899 Cook county
Did Jens & Karen Berg have estate records? If they had anything to pass on to heirs, Olive (or possibly Oline?) might be mentioned there.

hi jackie- sorry, i made a mistake about being listed in the 1910 census. jens would not have been listed as he did die in 1907. i have the death info for jens and karen; he died in 1907 and she in 1920, both in chicago. i am quite certain of all the birth dates for ole, anna, caroline and ragnhild. i know the death dates for anna and caroline, but none of the otehr children.
there was an olive berg who died in albany 1969.12.01, but i am not sure if if the right one. the year is right, but says she was born in june. on the census it says she was born in may, but it could be a mistake.
as far as estate records for jens and karen... i have no idea. i am somehow doubtful, but i really have no idea.
btw- i have seen a few mispellings for olive- aleve, was one, so oline is definitely possible.
thanks for your help! i have hit a wall and i have no idea where to turn except to hopefully find some descendants of olives, of there are any!

Hi,
In the 1900 census what state is given for Olive's birthplace?
A lot like today, in 1907, people's home is probably their "biggest" asset--were they owners or renters in 1900?

Birth records for Cook Co. Illinois (Chicago) should be checked - they are available for years 1878-1894.
Marriage license records are available for years 1871-1916.
Cook Co. has "Record of Wills" for years 1879-1928.
It will take research in the records of the area for you to be able to answer your questions about these extended family members. Check what is available to you online and then check the LDS Family History Library for availability of other records on microfilm.

I am not home right now, but I think her birthplace is listed as Illinois. I will double check tonight and post an erratum if I'm mistaken.
I am also certain that jens and karen- at least in Chicago- rented. Will also double check tonight. They emigrated in 1871 and lived in both rice and goodhue counties in mn from 1871 to about 1895-1890.
I was under the impression I was unable to get a birth record for someone born 1891- I will check the link above when I get home.
Thank you all! |

Hi,
Well, I had a brief check in the 1895 Minnesota State census and I found Jens Berg age 58 living with Corn Th___ Berg age 64 (?) , Aleve Berg age 4 born Minnesota living in Crookston, Polk County. Are these the same folks?

hi- yes they are! and i actually had that census but forgot about it. sorry- so, she was born in minnesota, not illinois. sorry- it would probably help if i put all the information i had on here correctly! still leaves me wondering what happened to her, and who her real parents were. don't you think it's strange for a 54 and 60 year ond couple to have a newborn? |

Hi,
Yes a birth for them as a couple at those ages in that era would be unlikely! However, you don't know about the fates of either child Ole or Ragnhild and it is possible that either of them could have had a child which they could raise or adopt.

yes, you're right. that is true. but ragnhild shows on the 1900 census in chicago, living with jens, karen, caroline and olive. but i didn't consider that something might have happened to ole, that would cause olive to be left orphaned, perhaps. |

Hi
Here is a 'noko a bite i" (something to bite into) for today....
From the Rowberg Biographical File:
Ole J. Berg, fiche 122, Thirteen Towns (probably the name of the paper but this is a local name for a location in Polk county), Fosston, Minn Sept 1, 1916:
"After a long, determined fight against the Dread Destroyer, Ole J. Berg succumbed to the inevitable last Sunday afternoon and the end was peaceful. (hand written note here Aug. 27, 1916)
Mr. Berg sustained an attack of heart failure nearly a year ago, and although he had partly revived, he later began to decline and his affliction developed into dropsy. Through his months of sickness he showed remarkable vitality.
Ole J. Berg was born Dec. 11th, 1865 in Christiania, Norway, coming to this country when 8 years of age. He was confirmed in Goel congregation, Goodhue County, this state.
He came to Fosston over twenty years ago and was afterwards married to Martha Bratland, his devoted wife who survives him. Of late years he has followed the painting trade and has always been an industrious, peaceful citizen.
A brother, Robert C. Berg, of Crookston; and one sister, Mrs. Kallak, of Fairbault, who was here last week, and two sisters residing in Chicago, survive him. Robert Berg has been here with him many times since his brother took ill and was here for the funeral, which was largely attended at the Synod church, of which the deceased was a member, Wednesday afternoon, the 30th. Rev. J.O. Saeter conducted the last rites, taking for his text Luke 12:37-38. Many beautiful floral offerings were contributed by relatives and friends of the departed."
Ole J. Berg married Martha Bratland on 29 Dec 1902 in Grand Forks County, North Dakota B-092 (Box 5, folder 50) If you wanted to get a copy of the marriage license, that would be available through the Special Collections area of the Chester Fritz Library, University of North Dakota.
Quickly looking in the census records, for 1900 there is an Ole Berg b. Dec 1864 Norway, came to US 1871, single, working as a bartender lodging with a Hans Samuelson family in Polk County, Minn. And I looked at Karen Berg's listing in the 1900 census and saw that it says she has born 7 children and that 5 are living. Knowing that both Ole and Ragnhild are living, as are Anna, Caroline, Robert, it seems clear that Olive may be her daughter but not "of the flesh."
It would still be worth your while to find whether or not there was an estate record for both Jens and Karen to find if there is any mention or distribution to Olive and likewise if Ragnhild did or did not or Ole or his widow Martha did or did not.
It's clear the family was in Goodhue county for a number of years and that would be a good place to look for the "missing" two children of Karen's 7. The headstones of Gol in Goodhue have been transcribed, I believe, and I think accessible at www.dalbydata.com. The actual parish registers might contain more information on the confirmations etc for the other children. And the church records from any church the family attended might contain more "gold" for you
Good Luck

Hi, Ole born Dec. 11. 1862 in Oslo had a twinsister, Anna, see 19&20 Parents; Jens Samuelsen and Karen Trulsdatter. Ole and Anna was perhaps confirmated same day in Goel congregation?
First time I see the Berg name, one of the godparents was Nathalia Berg.

jackie- that was amazing! i would have had no idea where to turn or how to find such records- thank you. i guess ole was also a bit of a mystery- i really had nothing on him, apart from birth and emigration years.
i am guessing that he and martha did not have any children, as none were mentioned in the obituary. that's a shame- i am hoping to find some distant relatives one day!
i tried to google "goel congregation, or goel synod, minnesota" with no success. any hints? there might be more information there, as you pointed out, since the family spent quite a few years in holden, mn.
i am seeing that years vary according to sources. as kċarto pointed out, ole and anna were born in 1862, not 1865 as the obit states. the censuses have also varied in birth years.
i am a bit confused about karen having 7 children- i know of 6 (well, that would include olive- probably not her own child). i'm always wondering how well they spoke english and understood the questions the census taker asked of them.
thank you so much again- that's a huge find!

Hi,
Gol is a more usual rendering of the name. The parish registers existing in the 1970s were microfilmed and are available for loan (and loan fees). Write to the archivist (Joel Thoreson) at www.elca.org to find if Gol Lutheran's are available.
I think there are questions on the 1900 census about English reading, writing etc.
