Hi

Agree, this Mathias was a bit interesting.
I don't know how reliable those censuses are. The 1900 census tells Mathias is born April 1850 ("my Mathias was born Des 1846).
In Norway there were strict rules for naming the children after grandparents, but none of the children have names I recognize.
However first child was born 1875 - I guess marriage year 1874 is more likely than 1872... (Unless they lost a child, of course.)
Is there a way to find more information about Mathias and Randine?

In one of your above postings you provided a link to a page documenting an certificate for Matias. If he left in 1872 as your first posting link would indicate, did he have to come back for the certificate, or did he get the certificate just before he left? Would that mean that he got married in Norway? Can you explain about the certificate a little more.

I will look for more information on Mathias and Randine also.

Have you considered the possibility that he stayed in Canada after his arrival. Earlier we found evidence that he had arrived in Quebec. Perhaps he stayed in Canada. One reason for my bringing this up is this document a Ontario, Canada marriage. The issues would be that Lambton, Ontario is closer to Michigan than to Wisconsin. Also mother is called Martha here not Maren. (After I posted the above I looked further and found two problems, one he is listed as immigrating in 1866 and he is found in the 1871 Canadian Census, Not likely your Mathias)

Name: Mathias Hanson
Birth Place: Norway
Age: 29
Estimated birth year: abt 1848
Father Name: Christopher Hanson
Mother Name: Martha Hanson
Spouse Name: Amanda D Johnson
Spouse's Age: 24
Spouse Birth Place: On
Spouse Father Name: Osbin Johnson
Spouse Mother Name: Amanda Johnson
Marriage Date: 29 Nov 1877
Marriage Location: Lambton
Marriage County: Lambton

Hi

...the Lambton couple looked so promising...
He could of course have moved on from Minocqua to Canada.

A certificate could be sent by mail; he did not have to come to Norway for it.
He left April 1872 and the certificate was issued 25/4 (or 25/7) 1874 meaning April 25 (or July 25) 1874. (Bad handwriting)
The certificate (Attest) is a paper showing when he was born, baptized, confirmated etc.

Unfortunately I could only find US Census data on the family. For the years 1910, 1920, and 1930 the family stayed in Rock County, Wisconsin. In 1920 Hilda is gone from the family, could have married, could have died ? The last record is the 1930 Census shown below. The transcriber got the name wrong, but the original census form does show it to be Mathias. I still do not feel very comfortable about the match, the birth year is always off several years.

Name: Nathan W Hanson
Home in 1930: Newark, Rock, Wisconsin
View Map
Age: 74
Estimated birth year: abt 1856
Birthplace: Norway
Relation to Head of House: Head
Household Members: Name Age
Nathan W Hanson 74
Anton M Hanson 55
Thea Hanson 53
Bertha Hanson 44

Hi

I guess it is not him then.
He was a goodparent in the baptizm of his sister's child 1872 in Norway so it is not likely he was in the 1871 Canadian census either.
Thank you for your persistence in searching for him!
