Anne Mathilde with a birthday of 22 September doesn't match what Florence's daughter reported as Florence birthday (21 November). Not ruling it out - just saying.

Here's an 1880 census that fits with the 1885 census in Holt township, Fillmore, Minnesota (posted on page 3) - and fits with the birth of Anne Mathilde and Mina Emelia.

1880
Minnehaha, Dakota territory, Minnesota
John Peterson 33 born in Norway
Annie Peterson 20 born in Norway (circa 1860)
M. Annie Peterson 2 b Minnesota
E. Emma Peterson 1 b Minnesota
1880

1885
Holt, Fillmore, Minnesota
John Peterson 47 born Norway
Anna Peterson 25 born Norway (circa 1860)
Anne 8
Mina 5
Helmer 4
1885

Anne Johnson b 1861-1863 living in Houston county in 1875, the only one is born in Minnesota:

The one in Houston county could be interesting because the head of household is named Ole Johnson, and as Ole Johnson is the head in the last one in Fillmore so Anne could also have Olson as a reasonable last name.

Minnesota State Census, 1875

Guess who lives next door to this family in 1875?

JKMarler: Re: Your notation about Johnsons living in South Dakota

Family (verbal) history says the Petersons moved from MN to SD - failed (a farming?) and moved back to MN. Nothing mentions where in SD they lived. This may be the connection I'm looking for.

Well, the topic is getting so long I could've missed it, but I don't think I've read that before. Woohoo! Another invisible thread to bind them up....

It would only work if there is some error in family record about Florence's birthdate and if Florence = Anne Mathilde....

Here's a baby Caroline born October 1874 to John Pedersen and Ingeborg Andersen. If same John Pedersen, this is an earlier marriage.

I don't think we've considered that John may have married before, Here is a likely marriage from Fillmore county in MOMS:
FILLMORE A2-301B 09/04/1871 PETERSON, JOHN ANDERSON, ISABELLA

Ingeborg is a name that is often Anglicized to Isabelle or just Belle.

A problem?

Not known with great certainty if they are the right John Peterson
1. 1875 neighbors to Peter Johnson age 23 so born 1852

Most positively known as the correct John Peterson:
1. 1926 Obituary age 80 years so born 1846
2. 1885 Minnesota Fillmore county census age 47 so born 1838
3. 1880 US Dakota Territorial 33 so born 1847
4. 1905 Minnesota Census age 57 so born 1848
5. 1910 US Minnesota age 60 so born 1850
6. Family tradition 1846 and 1851
7. Report from Death certificate age 80 so born 1846

John Peterson is being identified by his proximity to his whole family. Otherwise, we couldn't tell him from any of the other dozens of John Petersons. So throw out the high one 1851 and the low one 1838 and average the 6 remaining so the average is 1847.

Nice birth year math, lol.

Find-a-Grave memorial created by Cory gives Elmer Albert (Peterson) Martin date of birth as 22 November 1883. Died December 1965 in Hennepin county, Minnesota.

Official Minnesota Death Index
Elmer A Martin
born 22 November 1881
died December 1965 in Hennepin county, Minnesota
link

At least that's a somewhat better fit with the candidate family.

Elmer Martin married Myrtle Pomeroy 1909 in Winona.

World War I Draft Registration
Elmer OSCAR Martin
born 22 November 1880
Nearest relative: Myrtle
link

This 1919 record calls him Elmer OSCAR Martin.
Birth of a son

1920 census lists Elmer O Martin in Minneapolis with Myrtle.

Use of middle name Oscar also makes Elmer a better fit with the candidate boy. Maybe interest in the candidate was sparked by having seen these...
