For the most part Norwegian couples tended to marry at an older age. I wouldn't expect the typical first marriage before the man was at least 25-30 years old. I have many male ancestors of my own who didn't first marry until they were about 35 years old and settled into what appears to be a fairly substantial "career",
Of course, given what anybody expects as "typical" there will always be exceptions. Sometimes quite surprising exceptions. |

Oh yes, there were exceptions. When my greatgrandfather married in 1867, April 23., he was registrated in the church-book to be 17 1/4 years old. At that time there was a lower limit for marrying at 18 years for men in Norway, so he had searched and received permission from the government. The bride in this marriage was 31 1/2 years old. Less than 2 months after the wedding, she gave birth to my grandfather. Obviously they were in a haste. Generally spoken: I think that these customs may have differed from one part of Norway to another. On the western coast, that I know best, there were no rules over the 18 years, and great variations in praxis. |
