Could someone give me information on the emigration of Halvor J. Sannes and wife Gyro from Valle, Norway in the late 1880's. I believe they came to the United States with more than one child, my grandmother Thilda.
Any information greatly appreciated.

Wanda is correct he probably came through Canada. He was hard to find but using Wanda's link to the Emigranter list for Kristiansand I found Ole Halvorsen one of the other people on the same list and looking at the other passengers on this same ship came across H. Jorgenson. and the family with Guri Jorgenson (probably Guro) age 37, Children Jorgen 15, Arne 11, Torbor 7, Knud (not Tobias) age 4, and an unnamed infant 1 year old. Going to Grand Forks, North Dakota. From Ancestry.com.
Name: H Jorgenson Gender: Male Age: 47 Estimated birth year: abt 1835 Date of Arrival: 22 May 1882 Vessel: Prussian Search Ship Database: View the 'Prussian' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: Halifax, Nova Scotia Port of Departure: Liverpool, England

Hi,
You haven't specifically requested this information but in Cemeteries of North Dakota, Grand Forks County, Volume 6, compiled by Red River Valley Genealogical Society pub. 1974, East Walle Lutheran Church cemetery page 64:
Sannes, Halvor S. fodt Oct 16, 1842 dode July 21, 1928
Sannes, Guru S. fodt May 25, 1852 dode 8 Dec 1934
There are numerous other Sannes entries including this from page 68:
Sannes, Amund 74 aar dode 6 May 1894

Great work Wanda, the list matches very well with the passenger list. The passenger lilst did not contain a Tobias but did contain Knud and an unnamed year old child who is named in the Valle list although it is difficult to make out the name. |

It looks like Gunild, to me. This is quite interesting, because in the 1900 US Census, they have a daughter Gunild, but she was born in North Dakota in 1883. I wonder if the first Gunild died? Maybe during their journey, if they already had another Gunild in a year after they arrived. Maybe Sid knows the answer to that. |

Hi,
From the Grand Forks County Heritage Book, pub 1976, page 374 is a story about Halvor and Guro Sannes. It doesn't say who supplied the information but roughly cut this is the "journey" story:
"...They moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota in 1876. One daughter Johanna was born to them there on April 7, 1876. That same year they moved in a covered wagon drawn by oxen to Walle Township. Five more children were born to them: Sigurd, November 2, 1879; Berget, December 12, 1882, Gunhild (Julia) in 1883; Auslaug (Annie) 1888 and Salve, May 1, 1891."
There is no Tilda among the girls in the family but the son Salve married a woman named "Tillie Roisland".
Perhaps the querist could weigh in on the correctness of the family...

Interesting, since they immigrated in 1882. I noticed that one of the US Census's listed the immigration year as 1874. A puzzle! |

Hi,
Here is the family from the online Dakota Territorial Census transcriptions:
08-030-27 Sannes, Halvor 42 Farmer Norway Grand Forks 08-030-28 Sannes, Julia 32 Wife Norway Grand Forks 08-030-29 Sannes, Hamat 9 Son Norway Grand Forks 08-030-30 Sannes, Segar 6 Daughter Dakota Grand Forks 08-030-31 Sannes, Betsy 3 Daughter Dakota Grand Forks 08-030-32 Sannes, Annie 1 Daughter Dakota Grand Forks
A few bumps but mostly match to the the story in the book. If the family can be found in the 1880 census then they cannot be the the family travelling in 1882. (which see in transcription below and in later posts by other posters)
Here they are at www.familysearch.org 1880 transcription:
Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace Halver SANNES Self M Male W 36 NOR Farmer NOR NOR Julia SANNES Wife M Female W 27 NOR Keeping House NOR NOR Jane SANNES Dau S Female W 4 MN NOR NOR Segur SANNES Son S Male W 1 DAK NOR NOR Annie JOHNSON Other S Female W 27 NOR NOR NOR
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Census Place Walle, Grand Forks, Dakota Territory Family History Library Film 1254112 NA Film Number T9-0112 Page Number 530B
The original query was for journey story for Halvor J. Sannes and wife Gyro who came in late 1880s and who had a child named Thilda.
It appears that there are two different Sannes families with Halvor / Guro at the top of the ticket but neither with a daughter of the name Thilda. A lot of the folks in Walle Township in Grand Forks county came from Valle, Setesdal, that was the source for the name of the township. The Halvor Sanness story mentioned earlier does say he came from Setesdal as well.
The original querist needs to supply a bit more information as to which family might be of interest to him.Hilsen, Jackie M. |

Thanks to everyone for your information. Grand Forks is located about 60 miles west of McIntosh where my grandmothers parents homesteaded. Folk lore tells us they lost one or two children on the ship while sailing to America. I do not know if they came through Canada or Ellis Island. All of this information has been extremely helpful. I am writing a history of my family for my grandchildren, quite a job ! Thanks again. Sid Thompson |

In the 1900 US Census is the other Halvor Sannes living in Polk County, Minnesota. This one matches the immigration record for H. Jorgenson who came through Canada.
Berget is listed as the wife of Arne and the child is theirs.
Name: Halvor Sannes [Haloor Sannes] Home in 1900: Lessor, Polk, Minnesota Age: 64 Birth Date: Jun 1835 Birthplace: Norway Race: White Gender: Male Immigration Year: 1882 Relationship to Head of House: Head Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway Spouse's name: Goro Marriage Year: 1865 Marital Status: Married Years Married: 35 Occupation: View on Image Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Halvor Sannes 64 Goro Sannes 54 Jorgen Sannes 38 Gunild Sannes 17 Berget Sannes 24 Gina Sannes 1/12 Arne Sannes 30

Also from the 1900 US Census is the first Halvor Sannes now with the wife named Guro. Matches well with the family that Jackie has described.
