Hi Jodie.
I think perhaps Jens married Eli Sirene Sørensdatter Koppervik, Karmøy, parents Søren Rasmussen Kolletre 1781-1835 and Eli Malene Olsdatter 1788-1859, born Jan. 23. bap. June 25. 1820, see right page #23.

Serine could be Sarah in USA.

Well, only Jens wedding record can confirm that.

Ole Knudsen first wife, Magdele Olsdatter, died Nov 27 1846, see #98 (Magel Olsdatter).
(This Magdele/Magla/Magel was not possibly called Margaret in USA then)

Knud and Guri Espeseth also had a daughter Gunild bap. in Hovin "Nyttårsdag" Jan. 1. 1797, see bottom right page #1

Karmøy 1837:
Gunild Knudsen Nordstokke born in Tind parish age 32 married Jon Ommundsen Nordstokke April 22. 1837, see #6

The dates don´t correspond, Gunild is getting younger and younger.
Gunhild Knudsdatter Nordstokke died about 2 mths after she married, June 19, age 28 (perhaps in a child birth?), see 52

Hi.

Another Ole Knudsen (Canuteson) was born on Nordstokke Sept. 4. 1832 to Knud Knudsen and Anne Carine Olsdatter (Anne Karine is supposed to have died of colera on the emigrationship 1850), Ole see #90

Another son, Knud Andreas born on Nordstokke August 29. 1847 (onfo tells he died 1900 in Waco, Tx.), see #150

Oldest of the siblings born on Espeseth in Tinn, Anne 1792, the book Hovinsoga tells she married Lars Halvorsen Skaarnes from Sauland in
Hjartdal

Not found any wedding record for Anne and Lars

The last info I am able to find about the Nordstokke family are as follows:
Nordstokke consited of several farms, some had local names, The name on Knud Halvorsen´s Nordstokke was Rindå.

It was the son Knut Knudsen that takes over Nordstokke after the parents.

Guri Knudsdatter Espeseth died on Nordstokke August 21. 1826, age 57, see #18

Knud Halvorsen Espeseth died on Nordstokke as "Folgemand" July 20. 1845, age 87, see #48

"Folgemand" means the former owner of a farm secured free supplies as long as he lived.

Strange that the emigration records has not been found.

Yes it is strange,
I went to our County research center today. I need to read some papers. Maybe I will find a clue. It appears that all of them came at different times. I saw that in The Slooper book. That a Canute Canuteson also came at the time of Halvor in 1831. They felt that he may be related to Halvor but not Halvors brother.

It's a mystery

Thanks, Jodie

This was taken out of a Notebook Binder. Titled Norwegian Immigrants. ( I need to write down the author of the pages next time I am there. I found this at the end of my visit) It’s about her Uncle Rasmus
(Now we meet Ole Canuteson)
Ole Canuteson
In 1850 Ole Canuteson and his father Knud Knudson came to his Uncle, Halvor Knudson, in the Fox River Settlement. His Mother died from Cholera on the way from Chicago to Ottawa. In the Fox River settlementthey found Kleng Peerson, just back from a trip to Texas, and on his advice and promise to accompany them, they concluded to go to Texas. They went to Dallas County and stayed there 3 years, near whereJohanNordboe was then living. No Norwegian settlement was found there. In 1853 they went to Bosque county, and Kleng Peerson went with themnot as a leader but as a follower, as he was now to old to lead in settlement enterprises.
A few paragraphs later it states that, Ole Canuteson was born Sept 4 1832 on the island of Karm (Karmt) an island which abounds in monuments of antiguity, on the farm Nordstokke, near Kobbervig, in the Parish of the famous Augsvaldsn’sin Stavenger Amt. One of his Uncles Halvor Knudson, emigrated to America so early that he settled in the Fox River settlement about the same time as Gjert Gregoriuson Hovland, and became his neighbor. A younger Uncle Jens, emigrated somewhat later in company with a fiddler, Sjur Dale, who afterwards became a Mormon.
When Kleng Peerson visited Norway in 1842, he brought with him many letters from America to Ole Canuteson’s father and to others. In 1850 his parents resolved to go to America, and he took passage in the Kohler brig, commanded by Capt. Westergaard. In this same ship came Rev A. C. Preus with his wife, whose maiden name was Engel Bruun. Captain Westergaard also had his wife with him on board. (It goes on to mention a few others)
When the rest of the immigrants landed in Chicago all were apparently well, but on board the canal boat which carried them to Ottawa, the dreadful disease cholera made it’s appearance, among those who died was Ole Canuteson’s mother. When the people in the Fox River settlement heard of the cholera they were panic stricken and did not dare to receive the new-comers. Finally the Canuteson’s received shelter in the school-house, and fortunately cholera did not make it’s appearance again. (A summery on rest of paragraph – Knud Knutson only brought 500.00 with him and land was 10.00 an acre in LaSalle Co., they thought of going to Iowa, but Kleng Peerson said land was 50 cents an acre in Texas. So they went on to Texas.)
It goes on to state: In the midst if discussions as to where to settle. Ole Canuteson, young as he was, married a young lady of his own age, Miss Ellen Maline Gunderson, a girl who also had come from the famous Karm. Ole and Ellen were about 18 years old.
So, it appears things are much of what you all have found so far. (Wonder why exit papers are not able to be found?) Halvor came 1st in 1831, Then Jens comes before birth of daughter Julia in 1844, Then Knud, Anna and Ole came in 1850 (Separate from Ole’s new wife Ellen’s exit papers in 1850) No mention of Ole and wife Sarah. We know they came because they are buried here and Ole and Sarah’s son’s Samuel’s probate Proof of Heirship papers confirm that the 4 Canuteson’s are brothers.

Interesting story Jodie.

Captain Westergaard 1850.
They left Stavanger on Brig Favoritten Mai 16. and arrived N.Y. June 26.
No passenger list available.

Picture of Favoritten

Brig Kohler, could it be the ship that took them from N.Y to Chicago or was it the name of the shipowner or operater of Brig Favoritten build 1848 at Kjerringholmen, Stavanger?
J.A.Køhler & Co, Stavanger

I still have some info for you on your other topic, it´s from from Hjartdal, Aagot Halvorsdatters grandfather Torkild Halvorsen Haave.
