My grandfather Axel Holmström (1846-1943) wrote a letter to his wife Anna from Liverpool, dated April 10, 1888, telling her about his recent voyage from Christiania to Hull on the "Angelo" - he had nothing good to tell about that. In the letter he mentions other fellows in the group travelling together, but does not give their names. The DA would have these, but I have not yet learned to master this wonderful source of information. Is it possible to find out on which ship they continued to New York?

Thanking in advance for help!

Axel Holmestrom (37) arrived Philadelphia on April 25th, 1888, sailing on the S/S Lord Clive from American Line. Dept. Liverpool.
Source: Philadelphia Passenger Lists, 1800-1945

In the Oslo emigrant database which Hopkins links to above, there are 50 people from Sweden listed with the same agency and emigration date as Axel Holmstrøm.
5 of them are listed with hometown Bohuslæn and destination New York. 3 of them are sailors:
Karl Nilson 37 Bohuslæn New York Sailor
Axel Holmstrøm 41 Bohuslæn New York Sailor
Martin Bentson 37 Bohuslæn New York Sailor
Ivar Emanuelson 18 Bohuslæn New York
Karl A. Andersson 31 Bohuslæn New York

I would guess Axel was travelling with Karl Nilson (37) and Martin Bentson (37), both from Bohus län.

Many thanks for all information. I take it that Martin Bentson (probably Berntsson) and Karl Nilsson also sailed on the Lord Clive. There is a contradiction between the "Reisemål: New York" on the page from Digitalarkivet and the fact that that the three (?) fellows actually boarded a ship in Liverpool bound for Philadelphia. Any reasonable explanation??

Perhaps careful investigation into the actual passage of that ship in that year would help you. Is it not possible that a ship could have made an initial stop in "New York" harbor before continuing on?
