Hello readers,
I'm making a family book about a few of my famous Norwegian ancestors. One of them was buried at Gimsøy Abbey in Skien. The more research I do on this place the more confused I get. I have read that burned down in 1546 and cleared, but I'm still interested in finding is former location.

Here are my questions:
#1 I read that it was located on a island in Skien? Where is this Island? I assumed this is a confusion with a different Gimsøy...in Nordland County perhaps?

#2 I found a Gimsøy kirke in the town of Skien. Is this parish related to the old Abbey? Is it sitting where the old Abby used to be?

Pointing in the direction of a reliable source on the topic would be very helpful!

Thanks!
Heidi

Hi,
this would be the location of the Abbey your looking for:

On the Gimsøy island in the centre of Skien.
No traces of the abbey are visible today. Some archaeological examinations was done in the 70's, but no proof of the abbey was found, only some medieval graves.
Most of the island are occupied by the paper mill Norske Skog Union, but the factory was closed down in 2006. Some 70 companies have taken over the premises after the close-down.
See also Klosterøya ("The Abbey Island")
The exact location of the abbey are not known (since no traces have been found), but are believed to be to the left and middle of this photo, in the green area.
The Gimsøy kirke you refer to are located further south (see map), marked with "Gimsøy" and a blue church icon.

Hi Heidi,
a famous man buried at Gimsøy.

Do you mean Gregorius Dagsson?
