Hi, I am in the process of making a Heritage Book for my dad's side of the family. My dad's name was Per Martin Ruud. His parents came from Norway. My dad's dad was Edward Ruud and his mom was Margaret (Marguerite) (Margrethe) Caroline Ruud. Her maiden name was Sjol and her first marriage sur name was Weltsin. Her first husband died. I have a birth certificate for my dad that says the birthplace of Edward and Margaret was Sande I Jarlesberg, Norway. I also have an account written by my grandmother that says she left Vestfold and came to Canada on the Bergensfford steam ship in 1918. My grandmother Margaret came over with her nephew, Sigurd Salvesen. She married my grandfather, Edward in Canda and she was his second wife. His first wife was Margaret's sister and she died. Could someone please tell me where Sande I Jarlesberg, Norway is? Is there anyway that I could find the farm that they lived on or any direct descendents? Hi,
Sande is a municipality in Vestfold County.
Jarlsberg was one of two counties ruled by Counts in Norway.
Act of 1821 forbade nobles in Norway, which retained their privileges as long as they lived.
Jarlsberg ceased and was included in Jarlsberg and Larvik "Amt" County, later to Vestfold County.
Count Peder Anker Wedel Jarlsberg died 1893.

Parents: Peder Amundsen Søndre-Ruud (b. 16 Oct 1836) & Elise Mortensdatter (b 12 Feb 1842), married 21 Nov 1864
Edvard was married to Margretes sister Otilie before he married Margrete.
Edvard in census-1900. He emigrated to Wisconsin in 1904.

Born 05 Mar 1886, chr 26 Apr 1886, Sande, Vestfold, Norway
Parents: Olaus Martin Johansen Sjøl b. 1839 & Karen Johanne Kristiansdatter b. 1846

You have provided information that my family had lost during the last century as my grandfather died before I was born. I appreciate the time it took you to look up the information. On the map where you marked Rud sondre and Sjol nordre, what is the English translation for the words sondre and nordre? Jean

handwritten text is not always easy to read. The marriage date should be July 21 1864 as you find in record #13.
Peder Amundsen came from Eiker parish in Buskerud, his father was Amund Eriksen. He was born Oct 16 1836, see #13, his parents Amund Eriksen and Anne Borgersdatter were at the Teie farm.
Amund Eriksen, Teie and Anne Borgersdatter, Brække, both 25 years old were married May 27 1830, see record #12 on right page.

Edvard Pedersens mother, Elise Mortensdatter, was born Febr 12 1842, see record #12 on right page. Her parents were Morten Tollisen and Nicoline Syversdatter at Borgen.
Morten Tollisen and Nicoline Syversdatter were married Nov 13 1834, see record
#19. Morten was 34 years old and came from Borgen. Nicoline was 23 years old and came from Weberg.
Morten was a twin, he was baptized Febr 1 1801, see 5th record on right page. His twin was Anne Karine and their parents were Tolli Mortensen, Borgen and Berte Erichsdatter.
Tolli Mortensen, Tostvedt and Berte Erichsdatter, Borgen were married June 3 1800, see 3rd record on left page.
Bertes parents Erich Helgesen and Karen Andersdatter in

There are several farms named both Rud and Sjøl in the area, so the locations nordre, søndre, østre, vestre (north, south, east, west) are often added to farmnames to distinguish between them, since they are neighboring farms.

Margrethe Karolines (Johansen) sister Ottilde as born Dec 22 1882, see record #5. The father who was a school teacher, was born Jan 29 1839 and the mother who was a midwife was born July 14 1846.
The mother, Karen Johanne Christiansdatter was born in Vaale, see record #42. Her parents were Christian Svendsen and Anne Marie Sjulsdatter, Syverstad.
The father was born at Sjøl, see record #18. His parents were Johan Hansen and Susanna Olsdatter.
(Olaus) Martin Johansen, his father and grandfather, both widowers, and Martins siblings in 1865.

Amund Eriksen was born March 29 1804, see #1 on "1ste Søndag efter Paaske" on left page. His parents were Erik Amundsen and Aase Andersdatter at the Flesberg farm.
Erik Amundsen and Aase Andersdatter were married July 19 1803, see 2nd couple on right page.
Anne Borgersdatter was born Febr 3 1804, see #1 on "Fastelavn Søndag" on left page. Her parents were Borger Clausen and Marte Andersdatter at the Brekke farm.

Thank you Hopkins for the link to the Norwegian-English Dictionary and the explanation. Thank you Jan Peter for more detail concerning the naming of farms. How big was a farm back then? Thank you eibache for the incredible amount of work that you have done looking up ancestors. Thanks to all who have helped me. Your kindness overwhelms me. When I joined this forum I had no idea what you would provide for answers and really to be honest did not expect much. I am totally amazed. Canada became a country in 1867 and Alberta a province in 1905. I am so amazed that you have records dating back to 1803 and that these written records still exist and have not been lost. Hi, you asked how big a farm was.
Teie 1865 (mentioned above). Øvre Eiker muncipality, Buskerud County.
The owner of Teie (Theie-Teige) Amund Eriksen (Peder Amundsens father) was now a widower with two sons, Andreas 23 and Karl 15, a daughter Borgine 24 and a servant maid from Telemark County, Anne 17.
Teie prodused enough to feed one horse, 5 cattle, 7 sheep. The crop in barrels were: 1/4 of wheat, 1/4 of rye, 1/2 of barley, 4 of oat, 1/8 of peas and 9 barrels of potatoes.
Teige 1875, Amunds Eriksens youngets son Carl Amundsen b. 1850 owned the farm, unmarried and a servant girl Maren.
Teie /Flesseberg (Flesberg) 1900.
Carl A (Amundsen) Flesseberg married March 21. 1884 to Olave O (Olsdatter), see #11 (his father Amund Eriksen is mentioned in 1. column right page) two sons, Adolf K. (Karlsen) and Olaf K. (Karlsen).
All born on Fiskum, Carl was bap. in Haug church at Hokksund.
I wonder the reason why not the old church from 1250 on Fiskum was not used?
All of Karls siblings and father was born on Krekling /Fiskum in Øvre Eiker.

| Thank you Kare for your information and time. Besides farming was there any other occupation on the Ruud side? Was there a coat of arms or a crest for the name? When I look at the records it sort of looks like sur names or last names were not really used in the 1800's. |

In the 1800's; people in Scandinavia got their surname from their father. Peder Amundsen got his surname Amundsen because his father was named Amund. Amundsen (or Amundson), meaning "son of Amund". If Peder had a sister, she would have a surname of Amundsdatter, meaning "daugher of Amund".
Likewise, Edvard Pedersen Ruud is named Pedersen because his father was named Peder.

Hi.
Besides farming I dont have information about any other occupation on the Ruud side.
I found this information on the Sjøl family, starts with nr 22 Johan Hansen Sjøl and Susanne Olsdatter, Olaus Martin Johansens parents.
Som of the info are in English, a short summary of the Norwegian part further down.
Down page you can contact the owner for further information, seems to be a Swede.
The family on Nordre (Northern) Sjøl 1865, Olaus Martin had 7 siblings, 5 of them lived on Sjøl 1865, widower Hans Olsen age 90 "Føderaadsmand" was widower Johan Hansens father.
Sjøl info, children of Johan Hansen and Susanne Olsdatter;
1) Helle Mathea Johansdatter b. April 20. 1836 married 1867 to Truls Christiansen, she died 1921 on Veberg Østre in Sande
2) Ole Johansen 1837
3) Olaus Martin Johansen, teacher 1865, teacher in Valde district, Sande, 1868, bought farm Myra on auction 1879, before that he lived on farm Brubakken, but a flod destroyed the house. He died circa 1897 on Myra.
Children; Anna died, Susanna died, Johan died ummarried, Hansine to USA, Otilie m. Edvard Pedersen, see Jan Peters posting above, Mathilde m. Edvard Berg, Adolf died young, Margrethe m. Edvard Pedersen, Otilies husband.
Edvard Rud had 8 siblings, he emigrated to Canada.
4) Jørgen Johansen 1842, ower of Sjøl, married 1867 Karen Jørgine Christiansdatter. Jørgen died 1913 on Sjøl.
Many ancestors emigrated to USA.
5) Martha Kirstine Johansdatter 1844 married 1866 to Jørgen Martin Halvorsen.
6) Anne Helene Johansdatter 1847 married 1866 NN Kristensen, shoemaker in Oslo, lived in a small house in Vibe street. Called aunt An, she died at home in a fire before WW2.
The owener of this info think he/she has a photo of Anne.
7) Rise Marie Johansdatter 1858 died circa 1870
8) Otilde Johansdatter married Kristian Bernhard Kverntangen, Otilie died on Kverntangen in Sande.
Sjøl Emigrants from Sande via Oslo, any relationship between them I don´t know, gut I assume 3 Jørgensen boys were Jørgen Johansen Sjøls sons:
1892, Otto M. Sjøl age 17 dest Halifax
1902 Torvald Jørgensen age 17, dest Iowa
1906 Hansine Sjøl born -78 dest Boston
1906 Ole Henriksen age 33 dest New York
1907 Ole Ottersen b -85 dest New York

1907 Martin Emil Knudsen b -79 dest New York
1909 Nikolai Jørgensen b -89 dest N. Dakota
1910 Karl Julius Jørgensen b -93 dest N. Dakota
