AMAZING work you all do! thank you so VERY much!
On my side of the pond, I went to work to see if Hanna could be a sister and I have records here in the states that say yes. I tracked down all the children (she had 11 and married a man from Landesund in Wisconsin named Ole Jeremiah Gjertsen - changing his name to Jeremiah Larson here when he filed for citizenship papers) - all of their children have passed away, so am going to see if any of their grandchildren wish to exchange information and perhaps they have photos. On several of their childrens death records, they have stated they have no knowledge of their mothers parents, which I find odd, but I will keep digging, as I have one census that shows her mother Janna living with them, so now to need to find out if Janna did pass away here (the cemetary records are not clear if it is her or not) or if she returned to Norway.
How does one look up deaths in Norway? here we have social security number indexes we can check - not always accurate, for instance I have an uncle who passed away in 1934 and he's not in there, yet one from 1899 is listed - and it gives the area reported as last living.
forgot to add something I saw in the postings: could the E. Eriksen on Lars and Jannes wedding records be the later mentioned Elias Eriksen saw on one of the childrens baptism record? or too coincidental? |

Difficult to say exactly if Elias Eriksen and E. Eriksen was the same person but as best men and godparents mostly family, friends and neighbors were used.
I bring up some more records in case someone who has the answere looks into this topic.
It was probably Johannes Engerbretsen b. Nov. 4. 1880 who was the uncle Henry Martinius emigrated to in 1906.
Johannes and his father Hans Johan Engebrektsen, widower, watchman and houseowner on Øen (Øya) in 1900.
Few persons are listed twice in the 1900 census, Hans Johan was. Temporary place of living for Hans Johan Engebrektsen as watchman was the Fire departments tower, see here
Øya-Øen (The island) in Brevik where they lived is this area by the fjord with the church in the background.
More pictures from Brevik

That whole area - as is the whole country - is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing those pictures as well as the new found info! I still have not found him in (Johanne? Johan? Johannes?) in Pennslyvania, but still looking!
? - my mother is asking me if there is anything SPECIFIC in regards to Skein. She is thinking that she was told her father was from Skein.
Now I have not seen that town name anywhere on the links you all have shared, is that just another town like Porgrunn or Brevik? or perhaps they actually lived in Skein (if I locate the actual address/house they lived in, etc from a census) but the parish/church was in Brevik? |

In regards to Anne Sofie Ambjornsdatter m Svend Larson/Larsen - I found a Lars Jakobsson (could be just one s however) b 1730 m Mari Olsdatter as Svends parents and that came up because I found a reference to a Svend Larsen m Marthe Syvertsdatter b 1793 and they appeared to have a son Soren Svendson b 1823
If this is the same Svend, I am guessing that Marthe passed away and he than married Anne Sofie - and if them, I see they had more children together other than Sebylla Swendsdatter : Lars Svendson b 1789 Maria Svendsdatter b 1791 Anne Svendsdatter b 1796 |

Ref my posting 10/11/2010 "I believe the baptismal record for Hans Christian Ellefsen, Viktor Eugenes father, is #96. He was from Skien and his parents were Jørgen Ellefsen and Karen Oline Olsdatter."
Sibil (Sebylla/Sibila) Svendsdatter, her parents Svend Larsen and Anne Sophie Anbiørensdatter, in 1801. Here it is stated "Bege i 1te ægteskab" - the first marriage for both Svend and Anne Sophie. Svend was baptized March 8 1767, see 2nd record in column for "Drenge Børn".
quote: I see they had more children together other than Sebylla Swendsdatter : Lars Svendson b 1789 Maria Svendsdatter b 1791 Anne Svendsdatter b 1796
- these seems to be the same as in the 1801 census.
quote: If this is the same Svend, I am guessing that Marthe passed away and he than married Anne Sofie
- has to be the other way around, you say Marthe was born 1793, she was the same age as Svend children with Anne Sophie then!

Hi, I agree, Brevik is a beautiful small town, Skien is the administrative center in this region known as Grenland. Brevik merged with Porsgrunn 1964.

Apropo churches in Brevik.
Before 1670 Eidanger was the nearest church for the inhabitants of Brevik. They sent an application to the king asked to build a church which was granted.
A small church was build on Øya same year at a cost of 1000 Daler, in1878 a new and larger church was build next to the old one, the oldest was demolished when the new was opened. This church burned down 1960 due to an electrical failure.
The new church on Øya is from 1963.

Just checking back in (and thank you for that last piece of info on Anna's father!) - in searching through another site, gravemarkers to be exact, should I expect to see the same name I know now (example: Lars Peter Hansen) - or would it be transcribed differently onto a gravemarker? and for women, I should search both ways, correct? |
