I believe my grt grt grandfather Andreas Syversen Skartlien, b. 1835 in Torpa in Oppland came to America around the year 1866. I have not been able to find him on any passenger lists, however I just did find his brother Marthinus, two years younger than he, on an arrivals list at Quebec for the ship ANNA DELIUS in June, 1866.Going back and checking the Emigrants 1825-1875 passenger lists here I found him listed as Marthinus Skortlien. So he was in Quebec in June 1866. The trouble is, he was listed at a baptism for a son(Sigvart) of his brother Nils Syversen Skartlien in July 1866, and then he was married in April 1867 at Aamot church in Torpa , Oppland. Is it possible that my Andreas could have emigrated to America under his brother Marthinus' name? If so, why? Was he maybe escaping the military service or what?

I have no answere to that Ray, remember that not all emigrants were recorded and misspellings occured, but it looks like Martinius Skartlein was a misspelling since Martinius Syvertsen Skartlien married Helene April 8. 1867.

You needed a passport for the specified travel issued by the Bailiff in "Hadeland and Land Fogderi" to emigrate containing birth place, name, age, hair color, height, eye color, "Statur" (the size of body), special marks and signature.

Just a thought.
If a missplelling was done by the Bailiff and the owner could not read or write?

Source: Copy of a passport from Land issued by the Bailiff April 8. 1857 where the owner could not read or write.

You probably know.
Add. info at the bottom of the passengerlist for Bark Anne Delius 1866 three Martinsen siblings, nr 1-2-3, from Skartlien are noted.

Can´t find any of the 4 Skartlien´s in the 1866 scanned em. records for Land parish.
