Hi,
Your father Johan Marius Søderlund was Udskr (Udskrevet) Matros, Discharged seaman.
Mostly a matros was an enlisted seaman.

Tordenskjold was a coastal defence ship, in the 1900 census (Johan M.Søderlund nr 18448) the ship was called "Panserskibet Tordenskiold" " Coastal battleship Tordenskiold with a crew on 171 men consisting of;
officers, policemen, musicians, chefs, stokers, Gunners and Udskr. Matros.

I am not sure what task an Udskr Matros had, probably this men as professional seaman ran the ship.

Picture of Tordenskjold in 1900.

The origin of the name Tordenskjold

Just a small comment
quote:
Udskr (Udskrevet) Matros, Discharged seaman
- more likely Udskr (Udskrevet) Matros, conscripted seaman.
See ranks.

I also thougt discharged was a wrong term since he served in the navy even two translaters came up with the same.
A Matros served on deck.

If Peter Magnus Søderlund found here was Johan Marius Søderlunds grandfather, was Jacob Andreas Søderlund his father?
Peter Magnus Søderlund was Jacob´s steph father.
Jacob Andreas Søderlund age 19 in 1865 , born Nov. 12. 1847 to maid Caroline Christine (Andreasdatter) and bachelor and Bødker (Cooper) Jacob Fredrichsen.

Hi Jack,
your father was born in Kristiansund 1876.
The records for Kristiansund were damaged in a fire and the 1876 records starts in November 12 with a boy named Anton

I bring up some more records if you don´t mind, perhaps someone out there has an answer like when or where your father was confirmated, when or if the family left Kristiansund, the migrationrecord when he left the parish to serve in the navy, still lots to look for.

Your grandparents married Jan. 30. 1876:
bachelor Jacob Andreas Fredriksen Søderlund and maid Anne Gurine Torstensdatter, he born in Hammerfest, Finmark County and she in Nedre Stjørdal, Nord Trøndelag County Sept. 9. 1845, fathers;
Jacob Fredriksen and Torsten Andersen, see left page 2. marriage from bottom here
