My great grandfather Johan Christian Hansen was born in Aremark Østfold Norway in 1842. He married in Fredrikstad with Torine Sophie Rasmusdatter, and the got a son Hans Robert born in Fredrikstad in 1874.

I had information that said they then emigrated to Amerika..

After some work and very much help from friends, I found out that he in 1900 lived in Iron Moutains Michigan. He then used the name John C Hanson, and he was a widower, and he emigrated in 1887.
The same year his son Hans Robert marries a swedish girl Ida May Wedlund, also in Iron Moutains. In 1905 they lived in Milwauke Wisconsin.

But what happened then?

I have tried to find out when and where John C Hanson died, but without success. As I see it, there might be 2 possiblities:

1 .He died in Iron Mountains after 1900

2. He is the John Hanson in the 1910 census: 68 years Estimated birth year: abt 1842 Birthplace: Norway, Muskegon Ward 7, Muskegon, Michigan Marital Status: Widowed ,Year of Immigration: 1879 (?). He had a sister in Muskegon, that could be the reason for moving there.

My searches have mainly been through the FamilySearch databases, but are there other possibilities to find this information.

I know there are pay-sites like ancestry.com, but do they have more to offer.

Or could the reason for not finding him be that the records are lost.

Hoping for some help.

I found your 1910 census reference for a John Hansen.

: John Hansen
Age in 1910: 68
Estimated birth year: abt 1842
Birthplace: Norway
Relation to Head of House: Boarder
Father's Birth Place: Norway
Mother's Birth Place: Norway
Home in 1910: Muskegon Ward 7, Muskegon, Michigan
Marital Status: Widowed
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of immigration: 1879
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Mathilda Nelson 37
[51]
Lawrence Nelson 15
Clara Nelson 13
William Nelson 11
Herman Henrikson 35
Oscar Henrikson 42
Ole Olson 43
John Hansen 68
Bergar Larson 40

His age is correct, but the immigration year is 1879 versus 1887. So this John Hansen needs a little more verification that he is the right one.

Thank you very much for all help. Since I am rather new in this game, I need all the help I can get.

But I understand that it could be a challenge to find out when and where people were buried, especially when the FamilySearch databases not give you any indications.

Lester, you found out that Hans R Hansens wife`s sister Alma, got married to a James E. Watkins in the 1920 census.

This is interesting, because Hans R. Hansen (son of John C. Hanson) is another usolved issue for me. He marries Ida May Wedlund in Iron Mountains in 1900, and then moves to Milwauke Wisconsin, according to the 1905 cencus. Alma Wedlund lives together with them.
But in the 1910 census Alma Wedlund still lives in Milwaukee together with Ida May Wedlund. This Ida must be the same Ida that was married to Hans R. Hansen, but she is now single.
So what happened to Hans R.Hansen? If he died between 1905 and 1910 I suppose Ida May would used widow as marital status. Maybe they where divorced?

In 1910, Alma appears in two different censuses. One of them is in Iron Mountain, MI dated 15 April 1910 with Carolina, and the other is in Milwaukee, WI with Ida May, dated 16 April 1910.

It would be hard to travel that distance in one day, so Alma may have lived with Carolina periodically.

I also saw that Alma appeared in two different cencuses. My assumption was that she in periods lived with her mother in Iron Mountain, and in periods with her sister Ida May in Milwaukee.

But what could have happened to Ida Mays husband Hans R. Hansen? As far as I can see Hans R. Hansen and Ida May did not got any children.

Do we see the same problem here, to find out and get confirmed when people died and get buried?

The problem we have here, is the USA has a census every ten years, which offers limited information. 1930 is the last online census, and is available by subscription.

Some of our states have released births, deaths, and marriages on line, but very few.

There are several search sources that will charge a fee to search for births, obituaries, and marriages. The alternate is to do a personal investigation at a Country Courthouse. A state can also be contacted to do a search for you, but there will be a fee involved.

The internet is the easiest, but we seem to have run into a dead end for now.

If you are familiar with our Social Security Death Index, free from the Latter Day Saints, I found two James Watkins born in 1914.
One ot them died in Jan 1991, and the other died in 1984. The second one lived in Chicago, Cook County, Ill.

There are two George Watkins. One was born in 1917, and died in Nov 1970. The second George was born 3 May 1918, died Nov. 1980, from Chicago, Cook County, ILL.

If an obituary can be found for James and George, there could be some more detailed information to help in your search.

Lester, I appreciate very much your help.

I see the possibillity with George Watkins, he was son of Alma Wedlund, Ida Mays sister. But I dont know how a bituary can be found.

As I have mentioned I can not find any children from Hans R Hansen and Ida May (Wedlund), and Hans R.Hansen might have died in 1910

That is an important info for me, because if this is correct, I dont have any living relatives in the USA.

Because John C. Hanson was my great grandfather (he got a son in Norway, before he emigrated, and he is my grandfather) I would like to find out when and where he died.

Therefore I see the possibility to go to a pay-site, to see if they can find out when he died.
As I mentioned he either died in Iron Mountains after 1900, or in Muskegon Michigan after 1910.

Can you recommend any such sites for me?

Here is a link for the county clerk in Dickinson County, MI. http://www.dickinsoncountymi.gov/?death
Iron Mountain is in Dickinson County.

Based on what you know, I would start here, or some other organization which specializes in Death Certificates Obituaries.

When you read through it, you will see there is a fee involved. There are internet sites which will give you searches for up to seven days free, but I have never used them.

Good Luck

Thank you, I will try the net page you recommend.

Only one more question..

In the 1900 census for Hans R. Hansen in Iron Mountain, a population schedule becomes available. On this you can see his profession.

I am not able to understand his profession, but it seems to end with "Maker"

Can you see what his profession was?

John
