He is my grandfather. He died in New York City in about July 1935. My mother was 9 months old. He was married to my grandmother Edna Riggs Grant. He was born in Norway and after his death my grandmother sent a letter to Norway to his mother telling her that he had died. I have this letter. It was translated that same year but they didnt give me her full name. If I post the letter on here can someone help me with the her last name?

I think this could be him but i dont know what all the other stuff means. Where are you looking at this? What does Kings mean? Another question.... Is there a way to look at newspaper articals on someones death? I have one clipping but I dont know the date of the write up. I know there were other writeups about his death because he was murdered while working for Fleer Oil Service in Brooklyn, NY. I have the title of the write up that was printed not long after his death. I think it was in the New York paper at that time. "Job-Hunter Turns "Ghost", Scares Rival"
What does the 1907-1908 mean? I am new to all this. Thank you for your help. Sharon

I don't know if this is him or not. I think he was born Dec 1909 but i have no proof at all. Before he married my grandmother they didnt know each other very long and then he died only about 18 months after they were married. So I dont know if he went into Canada. I know that he met my grandmother in NY and they got married in Norwalk Connicticut in Jan 1934. he died I think June or July of 1935.

Hi.
Valsøyfjord or Valnesfjord.

Valsøyfjord is a former municipality in Aure

Valnesfjord is a population centre in Fauske

Both municipalities has Hauan farms.

The letter says that Edna should go to "Hawkland" to get it translated into English. A wild shot, but I did a seach for Hawkland, and found two people coming back to New York in 1923.
They were Christian ("Christie N") & Ida Salman Hawkland, going to 81 Lafayette Ave, Buffalo N.Y. Christian states that his father is Mr. Johan Hawkland in Vatnfjord, Lofoten.
The farmname in Norwegian should be Haukland, and you have several farms by that name in that area.

Going back to your letter again, I'm convinced it reads Margrete Hauan Vatnfjord Lofoten.
So Christian Hawkland must have been the translator!

I believe your Oscar Wilson comes from Vatnfjord in the Lofoten islands!
Possibly around the island called Gimsøy in Vågan municipality, Nordland county.

Now we could start looking for his christening record...

Jan, I remember my grandmother telling me that Hawkland was Oscars Uncle!!!! Wow. I am so overwhelmed. So excited...so grateful to you all for your help. Thank you Thank you Thank you...I also remember that Oscar had a brother named Odd and a sister named Sigrid. Sigrid died young in an accident, I dont know dates. Oscar's real father died when he was younger and the man named A. Hauan was his stepfather. I am trying to remember stuff. So do you think if we found Hawklands family they might still have contact with the family in Norway. I have cousins in NY from my grandmother ednas side of the family. I will ask them if they can tell me about Lafayette st. Oh my. I have dreamed of this day. I wish my mother was still alive to hear all this. Again Thank you so much. What do I need to do to look for the Christening record?

Hauan could be local for Haugen.
I have an intersting candidate;
Oscar Wilhelmsem b. Nov. 22. 1907 on Gimsøy in Vågan ,fosterson and "fl" a relative to the owner Oluf Didriksen and Antona Didriksen on farm Haugen in Vatnfjord 1910.

I think Oluf Didriksen and Antona Didriksen (christened Anna Magdalena Mathisadatter) was Oscar´s grandparents.

Farm Haugen was Hauan in Vatnfjord in the 1900 census, see Oluf Didriksen here

Could this be your Oscar?
I start to believe Oscar´s mother Margrete Olufsen was the same person as Margrete Hauan in the handwritten letter.

Oskar Peder Rolv born to widower and farmer Wilhelm Petersen b. 1862 in Olderfjord and maid Margrete Olufsen b. 1890 in Vatnfjord in Vågan;
Oskar Peder Rolv b. Nov. 22. 1907 in Gimsøy, see #2

Margrete Olufsen, servant on Ringodden, Vatnfjord 1910
