Can anyone help me confirm a birth record for Lars Larsen, Norddal parish, Møre og Romsdal.

I think I have found him in the 1800 register at...
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=15970&idx_id=15970&uid=ny&idx_side=-99
(page 106, top right)

I can’t quite translate the entry to confirm I have the right man. There appear to be a few other Lars Larsens born in 1802 - page 111 (bottom right), page 112 (left) and page 113 (left).

Lars Larsen married Olave Thoresdtr in April 1823 (entry #1). He was from Mölsætter at that time. I think I found Olave’s birth record in Gieranger in January 1800 (page 104).

Any help greatly appreciated.

I believe you should consider Lars Larsen baptized May 22 1802, see last entry on right page, Lars Pedersen and Mali Larsdatter at Mølsætter are his parents.

Lars Pedersen and Mali Larsdatter and Lars parents in 1801.

Olave, who was baptized Jan 18, her parents and siblings in 1801.

It’s a bit confusing because Lars and Olaves’ marriage record in April 1823 says they were aged 22 and 23 respectively. That puts Lars, birth at 1800 or 1801. I guess the farm name is more reliable than the birth year.

I think you can trust it´s the right Lars b. Mai.1802.
Lars L. Mølsæter died Nov. 23. 1883 on Mølsæter 81year and 6 mths old, recorded as 82, see #10

Wonderful. Thanks Einar and Kåre :-)

p.s. on the 1801 Census for Lars' parents (above), it looks like his father’s parents were living at the same residence as their son. Is that a correct translation? I couldn’t find a translation for the word ‘nyder’.

Hi!

You may have this info already, but I think Lars & Olave are here in the 1865-census:

http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=4&filnamn=f61523&gardpostnr=193&merk=193#ovre

Elderly "Kaarfolk" with their son Martinus, the farm Mølsæter is quite large: 9 large cattle, 29 sheep.. ++

Hi Jan,

Yes, that looks like them. I’m curious as to the status of this line of my family. My great grandfather (Peter Olavius Iverson) was a ship’s carpenter on an American timber ship but jumped ship in Melbourne in 1889. The family story is that he was ‘disinherited’ because of that.

I’d be interested in finding out about any property or status the family may have had.

Hi father’s family (Erik) was from Helseth. Mölsætter is his mother’s side.

Names of Peter Olavius parents (his father Iver someting) would be a great help, so would som dates.

Hi.
Møllsæter was in the past a sub farm or summerpasture under farm Møll located to Norddalen at World Heritage Geiranger up in the western hillside where the steep mountain side flattens with breathtaking view.

The road from the fjord passing Møllsæter is called "Ørnevegen" the Eagle road.
The view in photo nr 1 & 7 is taken from Ørnevegen not fare from Møllsæter.

Write Møllsæter Stranda in the map, zoom in and view Møllsæter.

Agree with Einar, we need some more meat to the bone to look for "Peder/Peter Iversen"...

There are however more info on the family at Mølsæter, they appear to be at the same farm both in 1900 and 1910.

Martinus Larsson Mølsæter is born April 18, 1831 and "still going strong" in 1910...!

Peter Olavius Iversen´s father was Iver ? from Helseth

Perhaps a good candidate born in Giske in Borgund on Sept. 30. 1855, bap. Jan. 1. 1856.
Parents; Iver Erichsen and Thorine Larsdatter Buholmstrand.
The first mentioned godfather was probably Iver´s brother Elias Erichsen Helseth.
Peter Olavius Iversen is #6

It´s them mentioned above, both of the parents and a son Lars born in Sunnelven (Sunnylven) in Geiranger, settled in Borgund before 1853 where a son Elias (Gregorius) Iversen was born Jan. 26. 1853

Iver Eriksen, farmer and carpenter and Thorine Larsdatter with 7 children on Grimmergaard, Buholmstranden 1865

Sorry for not giving you more information. Yes you are on right track. This is what I have found so far:
Peter Olavius Iversen was born in Sep 1855, Buholmstrand, Alesund. His parents were Iver Eriksen (carpenter) and Thorine Larsdtr.

Iver Eriksen was born at Helset, Sunnylven (b. Nov 1813). His parents were Erik Ingebrigtsen (Feb 1783) from Helleseth, Norddal and Gunnild Olsdatr (b. April 1787).

Thorine Larsdtr was born at Møllsætter, Norddal (April 1824). Her parents were Lars Larsen (b. May 1802) from Mølsætter, Gieranger and Olave Thoresdtr (b. Jan 1800).

I’ve managed to get back even further now (with your help):

  • Erik Ingebristen’s parents = Ingebricht Helseth and Brithe Erichsdtr

  • Gunnild Olsdtr’s parents = Ole Gundersen (Øye, Norddal) and Giertrud Joensdtr

  • Lars Larsen’s parents = Lars Pedersen (Mølsætter) and Mali Larsdtr

  • Olave Thoresdtr’s parents = Thore Pedersen (Aarseth Norddal) and Ingebor Olsdtr

Peter Olavius Iversen was still living in Alesund according to the 1875 census. Do you think they still had the farm at Helseth? Was it common practice in Norway to move to the city in winter?

No,
people lived on the farms throughout the year, some, as sons and daughters took up works in towns to supplement income or settled there.

Another name for Møllsæter was Øgaarden (deserted farm), see here

The name Ødegaard/Øgaard was often used on abandoned farms after the Black plague 1350 wher ab. 50% of the population in Norway died.

Lars Pedersen was born on Øgaarden (Møllsæter) to Peder Øgaarden, bap. Dom: XXII a Trinit 1756:
22. Sunady after Trinity (Nov. 14.)
Left page about half down 7-8-9 line from bottom here:
....nok Døbt Peder Øgaardens barn kaldet Lars
...again Baptised Peder Øgaardens child named Lars
Godparents; Peder Aarset, Niels Indereiet, Synneve Marager etc.

The word nok /again means that Lars Pedersen Møllsæter had older siblings.
