Go for it. Look for both.
Those emigration registers are also on the Digitalarkivet website but in extracted database form. You will find it helpful to know at least John Olsen's age at the time of emigration; perhaps some location of WHERE he had been born or previously resided; and/or some idea of where he was headed to. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/DigitalArchives.html

The Sander Hansen listed above Anna and Hjalmar in that emigration register looks alot like her younger brother from the 1865 census...
Hjalmar could easily be "Americanized" to Elmer - or even Almer. An Elmer Olson shows up later in Anoka Co. Minnesota - same Elmer? |

You guys are incredible. At work I cannot confirm the sibling names of Anna Marie, I will do that tonight but have little doubt that all will match.
I think the father first went to Quebec. Other family members followed, but not all at once.
I can see record 17. With this I will try to track down anymore about him. He is the last ancestor that I have to track down. Supposedly he was from north of Trondheim, but I have no idea where that information originated. |

I just remembered I found a family a few days ago in the 1895 Minnesota census that looked like them. But Elmer was Ole. Here he is shown as Ole Hjalmer. This makes sense then. That family is likely them. |

Sorry, 1885, not 1895.
John died in approximately 1890. One reason why he has been so hard to track down. |

Quebec was a common port of arrival in North America for those headed to locations in the upper mid-west of the US. There are many articles on this website about that.
The journey would have started with a "feeder ship" leaving Oslo/Kristiania taking this family to Hull in England where they would have taken transportation to another port of the British Isles to board a trans-Atlantic ship to their chosen port of arrival in N. America. There are many articles on this website about that as well.
The same emigration register for persons departing Oslo/Kristiania in 1880 shows a married Johannes Olsen of appropriate age, last residence Onsø and occupation matching that listed on the record of his son's birth. |

The marriage record tells that Johannes (John) Olsen was a sawmill worker when he married and where he was born.
Johannes (John) Olsen was from Løvaasen, born on farm Løvaasen in Grue in Brandvold in former Solør municipality on Mai 9. 1850, bapt. in Grue church June 16. 1850. Parents Cottager Ole Nielsen and Gjertrud Jacobsdatter, see #157
Seems like the scanned records are temporary out of work.
Brandvold, todays Brandval is today a parish in Kongsvinger municipality, Hedmark County

Amazing name Ørkjærnsbraaten, todays Aurtjernsbråten, located to a small lake: Aure means Trout Tjern means Small lake Braaten/Bråten means a small piece of land cleared by the pioneer/first settler.

The siblings of Anna Marie (other children of Hans and Gertrude Sanderson) included Alex, Eric, Ole, George, and Julius. Some of the names listed and some are different, but names changed. Anna Marie went though many variations but ended up simply Mary.
Thanks for the Norwegian lesson, my wife and daughter and I are headed to Norwegian language camp next week. Hopefully I can read this stuff eventually.
