I am trying to find information about my great grandmothers family. Her name was Anna Sjursdotter Kilen. I have seen her last name spelled many ways. She was born in 1870 in Sogn Og Fjordane Norway. Her marriage certificate to Fred Anderson in 1898 lists parents as Sever (Sjur) Olesen and Kristi Draegni (also listed as Dregni, Drightne). She emmigrated to Wisconsin in the 1890's, from what I understand, she came alone. She married Fred Anderson and they lived in Dane County Wisconsin. Would love to find out anything I can about what farms her family lived on in Norway, and anything I can about her family in Norway. Family Search lists her fathers name as Sjur Olesen Ottum. |

Anna´s parents married April 20. 1870, see top page #3 Fathers; Ole Larsen and Christen Olsen.
Anna´s mother Kirsti Christensdatter worked on farm Fortun when she married Sjur Olsen
Anna´s parents with two daughters as cottagers on farm Botn in 1900
Seem like they had lived on farm Kilen before they settled down on Botn.

quote: Anna lived on farm Fortun when she married Sjur Olsen
- she married her father!?
Of cours it was Kirsti Christensdatter, Drĉgni (i.e. her mother) that married Sjur Olsen. Kirsti Christensdatter was born Nov 10 1846 on Fortun, see #128, her parents were Christen Olsen and Anne Johannesdatter, Fortun.
Sjur Olsen was born June 13 1842, see #69, his parents were Ole Larsen, Ottum and Brithe Hermundsdatter.

Luster with Lusterfjord is the inner branch of the huge Sognefjord
Another spelling for Ottum is Ottom.
Enter this page, click on Luster-Alfabetisk-Kategori-Gardar and Ottom appears in the left column.
Good luck.

The part of Sognefjord where you can see the situation of Ottum (Ottom), Drĉgni (Dregni) and Kilen is on this map. You can zoom to your liking and also find other farms.

Sjur Olsen Kilens daughter Sofia was born on Kilen 1884. Another person connected to Kilen is Christian Tĝgersen b. 1888, parents Tĝger and Kari Kilen. He em. to Iowa 1909.
If he is a relative I do not know, but his ancestor has lots of info and photos at the bottom of this Kilen story

Thank you so much for all of the information. I really appreciate all of your time. Do you have any suggestions on how I would go about finding any living relatives in Norway? |

Hi,
1.) Best source for finding current connections would be most recently published bygdebĝker for your area.
Here is the web page of the Arne Brekke Bygdebok Collection in the Special Collections area of the Chester Fritz Library at University of North Dakota, Grand Forks for Luster:
http://bygdebok.library.und.edu/place/204
This library does not lend but you can visit to read.
Once you have names or if you don't then: 2.)The 1950 Tax List will also contain names of the then current tax payer.
http://www.dokpro.uio.no/cgi-bin/stad/matr50
After you have names: 3.) www.1881.no for current address and phone numbers
4.) Norwegian income tax lists for 2006-2009 for any lingering questions of who the named people are( this record gives birth year for individuals besides addresses and incomes )
or
5.) Find the local newspaper and send a letter of inquiry
Who knows though, you might luck into someone just by posting here...

Jackie is right, the Bygdebok is a great source.
It´s in Luster, Dale 1 (Band 2) published 1986 where Ottum and Kilen are mentioned.
There are 8 persons wiht lastname Kilen living in Luster and 10 in the nearby area today.
