He was born 11.03.1837 in Tune, Østfold, Norway, nr 35 here:http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7499&idx_id=7499&uid=ny&idx_side=-314
They emigrated to America: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7499&idx_id=7499&uid=ny&idx_side=-314 in June 1870.
Margit Bakke kindly found his Naturalization Record from Polk County 1884/85, and record of land bought in Polk County in his name in 1889.
After that, nothing.
I would like to find more about their new life, and/or living relatives, and I am hoping that maybe someone might have an idea on how to go about it?
Kari

There is a Mathias Anderson Family Tree on Ancestry.com. that could be of interest. The wife is named Bertha Bergan and one child is listed Martin Anderson born Sept 10, 1873 in Minnesota. Mathias is listed as having died in Dunseth, Rolette, North Dakota. Martin is listed as having married Mary Johnson and seven children are listed. Martin is also listed as having died in Dunseth, Rolette, North Dakota.

Hi,

The N.D. Biography Index at the Institute for regional studies has about 11 Mathias Anderson listings but this one might be of interest to this search:

Anderson Mathias

In that same cemetery is a Bertha Anderson b. 1831, not sure of any connection:

Thank you both. I do not think this is the right family though? They left Norway for Red Wing, and in 1885 and 1889 they were in Polk County. The wife, Birthe Maria might well have been called Betsy or Bertha, but she was born in 1942. The children born in Norway are not mentioned in these findings. According to the two records found the surname Minge was used in addition to Andersen.

The second link for the emigration record is the same address as the baptism record. More names to search, more likelihood to find living relatives...

Hi,

Here are Minge entries (excluding Mathies') in the Minnesota Naturalization records. Ottertail county is the closest to Polk of the locations, but a couple of counties away. Perhaps the Mathis' children went by Mathison instead of Anderson?

MINGE, FREDRICK MATHIESEN NATINDEXES (one in Douglas County, 1 in Ottertail County)
MINGE, OLE ANDERSON NATINDEXES (Ottertail county)
MINGE, EDWARD M. NATINDEXES (Ottertail County)

From the Institute for Regional Studies site, Obituaries published in the Fargo Forum:

Minge Louis Crookston MN April-26-1892 1 FF & DR col. 5
Minge Edward (b. 1870) (Dane Prairie) (MN) February 07, 1944 5 FF & DR
Minge Edward 1870 Dalton MN February 07, 1944 5 FF & DR

Crookston is in Polk county,

Here should be the "patent" to Mathias A Minge's land in Polk county.

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/details/patent/default.aspx?accession=MN0370__.063&docClass=STA&sid=fuj2wczh.n3t#patentDetailsTabIndex=1

From the church records database at www.dalbydata.com:

MINGE, EMILIE CAROLINE
father MATHIS ANDERSON
mother BERTHE MARIE HANSDATTERS
Born 02/AUG/1865
Died HOLDEN - FEB/1872 - HOLDEN CHURCH

(Also this death from www.mnhs.org may or may not be yours:

ANDERSON, MATHIS
Date of Birth: na
Place of Birth: na
Mother Maiden Name: na
certid# 1909-MN-010719
Date of Death: 01 May 1909
County of Death: ROSEAU
Likely this man is not the correct one as there is a Mathis Anderson in the 1900 US federal census Roseau County, Minnesota and his year of birth is 1823, and year of migration to US 1880. He lives with his son Ole Mathisen who was born in 1857 and came to US in 1879.)

I am sorry Jackie, this is the correct link to the emigration: http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=29&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=18178&personpostnr=18178#nedre
They have numbers 18178 -18182. Mathis is born 1838, Birthe Maria 1842, Emilie Caroline 1865, Edward 1867, Julie Marie 1869. The surname is Andersen Minge, not Meige.

I certainly think the land patent is for the right man. Margit Bakke found me following, which I also think is for the right person:
Minnesota Naturalization records 1854 - 1957 Name: Mattiess Anderson Minge
County: Polk
Reel: 2
Code: 4
Volume: D
Page: 400
Document Type: Declaration of Intention
Years: 1884 -1885
Numbers: 1-592. I am very inexperienced on the pc, and in the familyseaching business, please forgive me for the mess

Great!, Emilie Caroline is their elder daughter, not so great that she died as early as 1872. Whether it is the right Mathis' death is impossible to tell, but something to look closer into. That is for tomorrow though, it is night in Norway now.

Here is a death record for Edward Minge found here http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Results.cfm

MINGE, EDWARD MARENSIUS
Date of Birth: na
Place of Birth: na
Mother Maiden Name: na
certid# 1944-MN-011053
Date of Death: 03 Feb 1944
County of Death: OTTER TAIL

Not much information in the record. But I will look for the census records.
