Coming back to Ancestry.com and the Family Tree's posted there. Not all of them are accurate but sometimes informaion found there can lead to other discoveries. Searching under Minge I came up with Mathias Minge born in Norway died in Dunseth, Rolette, North Dakota. This is a different tree than the one I mentioned earlier but this one has the wife of Mathias a Bertha Bergan 1831-1917 and the children are Martin J Anderson and Emma Anderson. Same Martin as listed above. This tree has a second wife, no name given, but two children listed a Julia Fyrand Minge 1869-1950 and Edward Minge 1870-1944. This is the same Edward Minge listed above from Otter Tail County, Minnesota. The tree lists Julia as having married Henry Smedburg.

Somewhere in all of this data lies the truth, it is not always easy to coax it out.

Hi,

Here is the North Dakota public death index for a Julia Smedberg:

SMEDBERG, JULIA
died 09/28/1950 Divide
FEMALE 80 Years
born 2/21/1869
resident of North Dakota Divide County

There are wonderful resources for Divide County, I'll take a look at the published obituary transcriptions for this one and see what turns up.

Hi,

Bruce's name is well known in Norwegian circles...

The family leaving in 1881 has both an Anne Marie and an Edward of approximately the correct ages to match Mathis Anderson Minge's children. But it would be a strange set of circumstances that would lead back to Norway for youngsters like them to make the journey again in 1881...

Curiouser and curiouser,

Jackie M.

Thank you so much, this is a lot of information to sort out. I am overwhelmed by the help you are willing to give a stranger.
I will try to contact Bruce Gjovig about the Julia Minge born in 1869.

Kari , do you have a birth date for Edvard. I found the birth record for Emile Caroline but could not find Edvard in the 1867 record. Also a birth date for Julia would be helpful.

I have been in touch with Bruce Gjovig about his Julie Minge, it seems she is a different one, born in Trondheim.

Hi Kariellen,

From Obituaries Divide County Journal, Crosby, N.Dak., 1950-1969 compiled by Ron Gillund, page 9.

Published in 5 Oct 1950 paper, abstraction says this "Julia Smedberg (Julia Minge), d. Crosby hosp 28 Sept. Svc and burial Concordia Lutheran, Crosby. b. 21 Dec 1869 in Norway to M/M Matthias Minge. Family moved to Faribault, Minn in 1872. m. Henry A. Smedberg of Belle Plaine, Minn in 1890. Moved to Cando. Husband d. 1914. She moved to Crosby in 1945. Four sons & 4 daughters survive including Oscar, Agnes (Mrs. Ron Gjovig) & Mae (Mrs. Archie Peterson) all of Crosby. Two children have died."

The obit for Edward Minge b. 1870 d. 1944 published in the Fargo Forum doesnot mention a sister surviving named Julia, mentioning brothers John of Bellingham, Wash, Ole and Carl of Fergus Falls and Mrs. Hannah Peterson.

There is a short paragraph about Mathias Anderson (and a picture of him) in Prairie Past and Mountain Memories: A History of Dunseith, N.Dak 1882-1982 on page133:

"Mathias Anderson and his wife, Bertha, came to North Dakota in 1899, living at Cando, ND for one year. In 1900 they came to Dunseith, homesteading in the Turtle Mountains in Gilbert Township on land now owned by Erling and Helen Nelson.

Two children were Martin and Emma, who married Henry Hanson. Henry and Emma Hanson had one son Edward Hanson of Dunseith."

There is a page and a half on Martin J. Anderson & family on page 229. Here are the basics on him: "Martin J and Marie Anderson were two of the early settlers in Willow Lake Township. Martin J. was born and raised in Goodhue County, MN. In 1884 when Marie was four years old, her family left Norway and settled in Minnesota.

Martin J. and Marie were married on Dec. 1, 1899. They left Becker County, MN and settled in the Turtle Mountains (Section 35, Township 163, Range 73) during the summer of 1900."

Because Henry Smedberg was mentioned in the index I looked at Towner County North Dakota Families Volume 5 by Mable Lyle Jacque Hadler published about 1959, page 991:

"Odegard, Edward M., b Mar. 4, 1867, son of Matthias Anderson of Dunseith. Died Oct 1, 1916, bur. Egeland, Cem. His sis: Mrs. Henry Smedberg. Md May 5, 1895, Bisbee, Rev. Hagboe, Laura Stakke, b. June 18, 1860, Olesund, Norway, coming to Bisbee 1889. She d Jan. 19, 1942, bur. Egeland Cem. Homest east of Egeland. Children:....."

It would be extremely ironic if Julia Minge, Mrs. Henry Smedberg the mention which brought me to the Towner County books, turns out not to be "in the family", after all.

Having an additional name to look up, might help... By the by, if these folks are yours (which seems very likely) you will have relatives over here in the dozens if not the hundreds.
