Findagrave.com has two memorials for Edward M. Odegaard:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=odegaard&GSfn=edward&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=80551186&df=all&

and

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=odegaard&GSfn=edward&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=14730064&df=all&

Interesting details, last name Menge but adopted by Matt Odegaard?

There is a very long section on the Odegaard family in the 100th anniversary book on Egeland, North Dakota called Echoes From The Past, 1905-2005 , 8-9 pages starting on page 154, basics on Edward:

"Edward Odegaard was born March 4, 1867 in Oslo, Norway, and died on October 1, 1916. He married Laura Stokke in 1895 in Cando N,D. Laura was born June 18, 1860 in Alesund, Norway and died Jan. 19, 1942 at Westfield, N.D. Both are buried at the Union Cemetery in Egeland. They had five children: Bertha, Peter, Harry, Elmer and Ella...."

Anyway you may want to contact the Shirley Odegaard who put up one of the memorials for Edward at www.findagrave.com, links above.

I wonder if the Emma J Anderson in the household is the sister?

At www.familysearch.org in the index portion she is listed as "step-sister" but look at the entry it looks like H-sister probably half-sister.... Line 48:

Edward was a Mathison before he was anything else, maybe him in the 1880 Census transcription at the Norwegian digitalarkiverket:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=7&filnamn=MINN1880&gardpostnr=60237&merk=60237#ovre

And Julia, maybe, aged 10 as Mathisen (living next to a surname transcribed as a "Tyrand"--perhaps a Fyrand in the written schedules?), also from digitalarkivet:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=46&filnamn=MINN1880&gardpostnr=60431&merk=60431#ovre

In the actual schedule the neighbors last name looks like Tyrand but Julia's status in the family is Ad short for adopted

Here Julia is in the 1885 Minnesota State Census line 32 right hand page in the household headed by Truls Firand, from www.familysearch.org:

This is a lot of information, but it seems that both Edward and Julia were adopted, and their sister Emilie Caroline died in 1872. Mathis Anderson Minge appears alone in 1875, my guess is that Birthe Maria died as well and that was why the children were adopted. This is hearthbreaking, they went all that way into the unknown in hope of a better life.

Anyway, it certainly seems Bruce Gjovig's Julia and my Julia is the same after all, and there is a lot more to discover.

I am very impressed with the the work you have done, with the enourmous knowledge you must have and how you manouvre around in all the sources. I am very, very thankful.

Mathis Andersen's wife Birthe Maria died in childbirth according to Bruce Gjovig. From what you have found out here three children, Edward, Julie and Bertha(?) apparently were looked after by Gurine Lien , then adopted and using different surnames. Mathis Andersen married again and had two more children, one of them might be Emma and the other maybe Martin?

Anyway, it is necessary to take time now to combine the information from this thread and the passed down family information from Bruce, we should get a fair picture of what happened.

I am so very grateful
Kari
