I assume that you have looked for an emigration record with no success? |

He had a half brother named Edvard Marensius Johansen, born 1871, married in Norway 1896. There is nothing to indicate Edvard being in America.
I have searched both emigration and immigrationrecords. I have bought a month's access to Ancestry for this. Can never be sure of course, it is easy to miss something.

Here is the marriage record of the Karl / Carl in Marshall County from www.mncounty.com:
MARSHALL C-126 12/29/1896 NILSON, KARL M. HANSON, NATALIA
Middle initial is M there, too. |

Here is another possibility. He seems to be travelling without family. Manifest states that his last residence was Notteroy? Probably Nøtterøy. Going to Chicago IL. Name given maybe brother in law Anders Anderson. Maybe travelling with a Hans Thorsen Thorvald who is also going to Chicago IL to his son Thorvald Thorsen. He is also from Nøtterøy. All from Ancestry.com.
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 Name: Karl Nicolai Nilsen Arrival Date: 28 Apr 1904 Birth Year: abt 1862 Age: 42 Gender: Male Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian Port of departure: Liverpool, England Port of arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Oceanic The address given for Anders Anderson is 1466 Monticello Avenue, Chicago, IL
