I am searching for some information on my great grandfather's sister Ingeborg Melaas (b. 1896). She was born in Gjerstad, Norway, as the daughter of Harald and Anne Melaas. She migrated to New York with the ship "Kristianiafjord" in 1914, invited of Rev. Pettersen from the Betelship Methodist Church. Does anyone know anything about her? Did she marry? Children? |

Utterly weird...
There are 2 Ingeborg Melaas' coming in 1914 through Ellis Island, with the home of Gjerstad, Norway on 2 different ships but coming to visit a friend named Rev Petterson in New York. The other Ingeborg is listed as aged 27 years, 7 months and came on the United States. Is there any relationship between the 2 Ingeborg?
By the by, what is Ingeborg's birth date? There are only 98 Ingeborg b. 1896 in the SSDI--she might be one of them... |

Here is an interesting candidate. There are only two Ingeborg's in the 1920 US Census living in the state of New York. One arrived in 1907, this one arrived in 1914.
1920 United States Federal Census 1920 United States Federal Census Name: Ingeborg Bruns Age: 25 Birth Year: abt 1895 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1920: Bronx Assembly District 2, Bronx, New York Race: White Gender: Female Immigration Year: 1914 Relation to Head of House: Wife Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Charles Bruns Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway Able to Read: Yes Able to Write: Yes

I have found the marriage of Emma Melaas (Emma is the shortform of Ingeborg, very common in Gjerstad) and Georg Tengelsen from Risør. They married in the norwegian Sailor's Church in NY in 1917. http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=vi21001878ny&personpostnr=4258&merk=4258
They had at least three children; Leonard, Eleanor and George jr. Leonard died in 1982, George in 2011, and Eleanor seems to be still alive. I am not sure, but I wonder if she married Johnny Dydland. I have sent emails to their grandson to make sure.
Thank you for searcing so much!!
I will come back with more questions about american relatives. |
