This is my first step into researching an ancestor I have just recently discovered is from Norway.
So where do I start ??
The only information I have is from his daughter's baptism in Berwick-upon-Tweed, England in 1810
Martha GEORGINSON b. April 2 1st daughter of James GEORGINSON mariner native of Norway wife Elizabeth ANDERSON (native this parish)
I am wondering if his name has been completely anglicised. Without his birth place I am sure I am at a dead end but thought it worth seeing if someone on this forum can give me some suggestions.
Thanks
Lea-Anne

This can be a tough one...

James Georginson could be Johannes Jørgensen in Norway.

Thank you Jan Peter
It seems like a common name, but without a birth place I don't know where to start. Any suggestions.

It's a very common name. Without any other information, it will be difficult, No age or anything? Names of his other children?

Were both parents born Norwegian?
I agree with Jan Peter.

Pronunciation of the alphabet in English and Norwegian are quite different.

James is not a Norwegian name, in 1801 17 persons with first name James lived in Norwy.
Neither Georginson is Norwegian, but quite similar pronunciation to the Norwegian lastname Jørgensen.

From the research I have done so far -
James Georgison died in 1844 aged 64 in Gateshead, Durham (birth year 1780)
I am still looking for his marriage to Elizabeth Anderson. She was born in Burton, Northumberland about 1780 as well.
First child born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland.
Other children from FamilySearch website -
William Jorgeson, 1819, Hull, York
twin (I think) to Elizabeth Jorgeson, 1819, Hull, York
Ann Jordeson, 1821, Hull, York
James Georgison, 1823, Hull, York
Robert Georgison, 1824, Hull, York

All names spelt as found, so the Jorgeson is a possibility.
Would it be possible to have a translation of the details from the census for all sailor aged about 20-21.
Thanks so much for your help so far.

Yes that is him in the 1841 Census. It was the "foreign parts" that started me on this search. It wasn't til I got the details of the baptism of Martha where it said he was a mariner, native of Norway that I knew exactly where to start - sort of.

Died at age 64, born 1780 (estiamated year?)
12 men with firstname starts on J. with last name Jørgensen in the 1801 census.

An interesting candidate.
Johannes Jørgensen, sailor, born on farm Vestre Fidje 1780 on the island Hidra, Flekkefjord town, Vest-Agder County, age 20 in Flekkefjord town in1801.
Parents farmer and reserve pilot Jørgen Nilsen and Marthe Lene Larsdatter.

I know several people who's name was Johannes, and became "James" in the US. Buth John or Johs was also used a lot.
I'm not sure how common it was to anglicise Johannes into James in 1820? What about "Jens"? That could sound like James.

About his son James Georgison, born 1823: Have you ever seen his name spelled in a different way? I would guess he is named after his father.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Its all a little daunting for me. Kare - why is your Johannes Jørgensen an interesting candidate. I can see the significance of the father's name. I can't see him in the list that Jan Peter suggested though.
Jan Peter - is there any way to find out the names of the fathers in your list of candidates in blue.
I have not seen his son James written any other way. What was the next census date in Norway. Is it possible to eliminate any candidates by seeing if they are in the next census.
Are there any records in Norway that show the movements of citizens from their home towns.
I am very appreciative of everyone's help and would greatly appreciate any more suggestions on narrowing down the list.

Lee-Ann, FreeBMD lists James death Q4, 1844 and Elizabeth Georgison, died Gateshead Q3, 1854. This facililty does not cover birth, marriage or death events prior to 1837. Between 1837 and 1850, and later, there are several such events in Gateshead and other neighbouring places in the north-east - maybe other children or grandchildren. If you can't search yourself on the FreeBMD site, let me have your e-mail address and I'll send you the details.

Your James settled in England before 1819.

Sailor Johannes Jørgensen born 1780 on farm Fidje I found is only an interesting candidate.
His father Jørgen Nilsen died on Fiddje 1812 and the mother Marthe Lene Larsdatter died on Fidje 1821.

A probateregister will probably give more information reg. their son Johannes Jørgensen b. 1780.
Some probate registers are online, all probateregisters in Norway will be online within a few years.

Still some Jørgensen sailors b.1780 or ca. 1780 to look up.

You can find the fathers name in the free online 1801-census. But I would not focus too much on the father at this time of the search.
The father of a man with a lastname of "Jørgensen" would in most cases have a first name = Jørgen in 1801. If written in England, possibly "Jorgen" or "George"?
The next complete online census is from 1865.

The Norwegian 1801-census can be searched (in english) here.

Amt - County
Prestegjeld - Parish
Sokn - Sub parish
