So Kåre, are you saying you think the candidate I found was wrong?

With respect may I say given the evidence below, maybe saying Andrew is Arne needs more rational to say why.

The American family has a story that Andrew S. Lexvold had birth name of Anders Severson (as posted by slexvold).
Sever/Siver/Syver/Sivert/Sivert/Syvert can be the same name.
A book called "History of Goodhue County Minnesota" published 1909 has a biography of him.
The book says Anders Andrew was born 09 Nov 1829. The candidate Anders was born 09 Nov 1829.
The book says Anders Andrew emigrated 1866. The candidate emigrated 1866.
The book says Anders Andrew had a son Sivert born March 1862 in Norway. The candidate has a son Sivert born March 1862 in Norway.
The book says Anders Andrew had a first wife Berntine. The candidate first married a Berntine.
The book says Berntine died in Norway. The candidate Berntine died in Norway.
The book says Anders had daughters Martha, Anna, Sarah (and other children). The candidate had daughters Martha, Anna, and Seri born in Norway.
The US census 1880 shows the other children were born in the US.
The candidate emigrated from Norway with children Martha, Anna, Seri, and Sivert.
The candidate emigrated with people who appear to be siblings. The candidate sister Sigrid and husband are buried in a county near to where Anders Andrew is buried.
ADDITION --- the candidate Anders Sivertsen emigrates in company with Hemming Sivertsen and Hemming son Sivert Hemming Sivertsen. The candidate birth record has a father Sivert Hemmingsen.
The candidate Anders lives with mother Mali Christensdatter in 1865.
The birth record 09 Nov 1829 has candidate Anders with mother Mali Christensdatter.
The candidate family who emigrated are traveling with Mali Christensdatter age 60.

More can be found but at the moment no family member is reading this thread.

I think Andrew Severson Lexvold and the candidate Anders Sivertsen are a good fit.

Hi.
I am not sure but there are four Lexvold farms in Ål and his day of birth and lastname correspond.

Okay, I amended my recap to show that so far we have no evidence that Andrew in the USA had a birth name of Anders.

Back in an edit - the tombstone of Andrew S Lexvold is inscribed
Anders Severson Lexvold

Perhaps you are right Jane. It seems like he had a "name sake", It was the Lexvold farm in Ål that got me to assume he was a good candidate

Kåre, yes I think the candidate Anders b in Nord-Trondelag is correct because there are too many "coincidences." You made me realize I omitted the source found in USA for "Anders" and I agree, we can't just assume Andrew is ALWAYS Anders. In addition I see your point about Lexvold.

If all Lexvold farms are in Buskerud, why is a boy born in Nord-Trondelag going to later become Lexvold? I can't see the sense of it either.

Several possible approaches:

1) follow the life of Arne born 09 Nov 1829 - track forward in time. Does he marry a Berntine, have children with names that correspond to US records, and then emigrate?

2) follow the life of Anders born 09 Nov 1829 - follow back in time. Is Lexsvold an ancestral home?

3) seek naturalization record and death record for Andrew S Lexvold and develop still more points of matching between him and the candidate Anders (or connections to Arne, or to....). Some descendants might have stories not posted online.

4) consider other, unexpected origins for the name Lexvold - from a wife for example. There must be a reason.

First to check is more children of Andrew. Also, the family (seeming mother and siblings to Anders) emigrating in 1866 seemed to go to same place as Andrew S Lexsvold, but more details about them could be found.

Though I am curious, I won't have time in the coming days to work on this.

This is anecdotal, may or may not apply here. There was a family who came from Hallingdal and settled down near Spring Grove Minnesota. They bought a farm belonging to a family who came from Sigdal and who were using a farm name from Sigdal. After the Hallings bought the farm forever after they went by the Sigdal farm name.

There were people who came from Lexvold (now Leksvol) in Aal who settled in Minnesota. Perhaps these people from the north of Norway bought a farm vacated by people using Lexvold as their name and following the custom in the old home took the name of their farm?

Otherwise, it might be wise to see if there is a farm with a different spelling but similar to Lexvold in the north of Norway, too.

This is from the Digitalarkivet:
Lekvold 16a Selbu Tydal Selbu Sør-Trøndelag Folketelling 1865 for 1664P Selbu prestegjeld
Lekvold* Selbu Tydal Selbu Sør-Trøndelag Folketelling 1865 for 1664P Selbu prestegjeld
Lekvold* Selbu Tydal Selbu Sør-Trøndelag Folketelling 1865 for 1664P Selbu prestegjeld
Lekvold* Selbu Tydal Selbu Sør-Trøndelag Folketelling 1865 for 1664P Selbu prestegjeld
Lekvold* Selbu Tydal Selbu Sør-Trøndelag Folketelling 1865 for 1664P Selbu prestegjeld
Lekvold* 16b, 16c Selbu Tydal Selbu Sør-Trøndelag Folketelling 1865 for 1664P Selbu prestegjeld
Lekvold* 16a Selbu Tydal Selbu Sør-Trøndelag Folketelling 1865 for 1664P Selbu prestegjeld

There was an Anders Anderson Leksvol Hansebraaten b 8 Aug 1828 Aal on Leksvol who went to America and died there in 1923, but I found no Anders Syverson b. 1829 leaving from Leksvol for US in the new series bygdebøker for Aal.

Lexvold is a very old name and it comes from mans name Leikr and vold means a kind of embankment.
In 1310 the name was written Leicksuall.

In Størdal churchbook is recorded birth 20 October 1855 - Martha - born to Anders Sivertsen Rognaas? Præstmo and Berntine Henrika Holgersdatter.

About Lekvold in Sør-Trøndelag - so perhaps the Minnesota family has a connection to a Lekvold farm there - at least it is in the same fylke where they lived in 1865.

Andrew and family are Severson in 1880.

Interesting background, Kåre.

****Thanks to Einar for farm name correction.

Is this one farm plus sub-farms? I can't find it on Finn-Kart.

Here is a Lekvollen in Selbu, marked with a red pin. MAP

Also marked with red pins are the churches in Strinda and Størdal.

It seems realistic that a man born in Størdal (Anders) who moved to Strinda might have had a connection to Lekvold in Selbu (whether or no it is the place marked with the pin). The places marked with the pins are about 30 km apart (about 18-19 miles apart).

Here's a family tree for a family from Lekvoll (Lekvollen) said to have emigrated to Minnesota: Link

Selbu and Tydal are communities, why Lekvollen is related to both is difficult to say.
