Am looking for ancestors of my Great Grandfather, Harold Haroldson Hanson born March 26, 1844 in Hjartdal, Telemark, Norway. His father was Harold Hanson Midboen and was born in 1820 in Norway. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Dick,

you could most easily pick up Harold's mother's name by looking in the digitzed parish register online at the Norwegian Digitalarkivet in Hjartdal døbte or baptism records for Harold, since you have an exact date.

Depending on when Harold came stateside, he could also be searched for in the 1865 Norwegian census online also at the Digitalarkivet.

Good Luck

A hard nut, I might have overlooked him, but I have a feeling that something does not correspond.

Harald Haraldsen b. 1844, father Harald Hansen Midbøen, present Midtbøen.
Hjartdal, former Hierdal in Telemark County.

No sign of a Harald age 20 plus/minus 5 years in Hjartdal in 1865.

Did Harald b. 1844 married in Norway?
Did he emigrate?
If not, when ca or who from this family emigrated?

Lots of difficult questions Dick, we are only trying to help.

On Midtbøen 1900 a Thone Haraldatter b. 1848 lived, I thouhgt perhaps she could be a sister to Harald Haraldsen, but her parents were Harald Kittelsen and Ragnild Olsdatter.

Midtbøen emigrants;
- Ole Kjetilsen b. 1818
- Anne Lofthus, to America 1843 or 1848
- Aslaug Kittilsdatter b. 1831 to America 1854
- Ragne Høljesdatter b. 1853
- Aslaug Høljesdatter b. 1860 to Minnesota
- Hans Høljesen b. 1867 to America, returned home.

I guess this is your Harald Hansen Midtbøe?
It doesn't say where he married Anna Jonsdatter Haugeberg, but I guess it could be Iowa?
Anna died 20 Dec 1871, and is buried at "Rue Cemetery"

Son Anton in 1880.

Anna's parents lived in Muskego, Wisconsin in the 1850's. I believe they are from Hjartdal, Telemark.

Haralds mother widow Margit Olsdatter was from farm Stuvøen.
Harald Hansen was confirmated living on Stuvøen in 1860, see #18

Margit Olsdtr is listed as a widow and her son Harald on Stuvøy (Løksli, Stuvøy) on page 257 of the book "Hjartdalsoga Gard og Ætt Hjartdal Gvammen. Band III B" by Gjertrud Kleveland.Karlsrud. I do NOT see any hints there as to when she was born, where she was born or who she was the widow of.

In this confirmation record from Oct. 28. 1860 Harald Hansen´s birthplace is first written Midbøen but crossed out and replaced with Stuvøen (Stuvø), see #17

His vaccination record against smallpox from Oct. 19. 1848 tells that Harald´s birthpalce/place of living was Midbøen, blurred letters, see #177

The Margit Olsdatter mentioned just above is shown as excerpted (she is not the widow Margit Olsdtr we are seeking) -

"Leine øvre, gnr. 72.1
Bruksnamnet er Leine
..........
... 1) Hans Torkelson... f. 1771
... ... 1. Torkel f 1805 g 1833 m. Margit Olsdtr. Frøland, fekk dtr. Margit i 1839, og reiste til Amerika i 1848... "

from "Hjartdalsoga Gard og Ætt - Sauland, Band II", page 315

Ellimination method works well Hopkins :-)
So Margit Olsdatter Frøland em. 1848 with a dau. Margit and husband Torkild to America 1848.
Then she is excluded as Haralds Mother

Does the book Hjartdalsoga has anything on Hans Olsen Dalen?

Is the 45 year old Margeth Olsdatter #31b of any interest here?

Probably not, here is her marriage, listed as "pige", #9:
Source information: Telemark county, Kviteseid, Parish register (official) nr. I 6 (1836-1858), Marriage records 1850, page 414.
