Cleverly hidden as Johnson?

Here is a household in the Norwegians in America database for Wisconsin in 1880 at the Digitalarkivet:

84162 18 Sumner Trempealeau Halver Johnson 47 m N N N f
84163 18 Sumner Trempealeau Nellie Johnson 47 f N N N
84164 18 Sumner Trempealeau Martin Johnson 15 m N N N
84165 18 Sumner Trempealeau Chrys Johnson 14 m N N N
84166 18 Sumner Trempealeau Theodore Johnson 12 m N N N
84167 18 Sumner Trempealeau Herbert Johnson 9 m N N N
84168 18 Sumner Trempealeau John Johnson 7 m W N N
84169 18 Sumner Trempealeau Albert Johnson 5 m W N N

This is probably the Halvor C Johnson family above in the 1900 census in North Dakota:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M9VV-WQW

Nellie is born in Aug 1844 and has had 13 children and 6 are living. It also says they came to US in 1864.

In the Wisconsin Deaths and Burials database at www.familysearch.org, there are 3 deaths in the Halvor C. Johnson family in Trempealeau county. The 3 children died within 6 days of each other. Their parents are listed as Halvor C. Johnson and Pernille Thorstenson. Names:
Julius Johnson b. 21 May 1882 Sumner Wisconsin-d 4 May 1885 Sumner, buried in Jackson County
Ema Johnson b. 6 Mar 1884 Sumner, Wisconsin d. 6 May 1885 Sumner buried Jackson
Otto Johnson b.11 Aug 1878 Sumner d. 10 May 1885 Sumner buried Jackson

In the North Dakota Public Death Index there is a Nellie Johnson (although characterized as male!) dying in McIntosh County:
Name (Last, First Middle) Date of Death County of Death Gender Age Date of Birth State of Residence County of Residence
JOHNSON, NELLIE 06/09/1908 McIntosh MALE 67 Years 08/02/1840 North Dakota McIntosh

An Albert J Johnson, Charles Johnson, Christ H Johnson, Martin H. Johnson, and 2 Halvor / Halver C Johnson took homesteads in McIntosh County, North Dakota. If all goes well this should be a link to all Johnson homesteads in McIntosh County:

That is really strange about possibly changing the last name to Johnson. It sure looks like the same bunch. Did that happen often? And, then, it looks like they came over in 1870 but it is listed as 1864 on the 1900 census.

Today I checked the book McIntosh County Cemeteries by the Bismarck-Mandan [North Dakota] Genealogical Society published in 1998 and found these listings in a cemetery identfied as Evangelical Lutheran Christian Congregation Church Cemetery (aka Pudwill Cemetery) located on T 131 N, R70W, section 17 on page 124:

Johnson, Agnes P 1906-1922 d/o Albert J.
Johnson, Albert J 1875-1943 w. Olive 1881-1950
Johnson, Olive 1881-1950 husband Albert J. 1875-1943
Johnson, John E. 1872-1946 w. Regina 1873-1939
Johnson, Regina 1873-1939 husband John E. 1872-1946

The other Johnson families in the headstone transcriptions appear to be related to a man who came from Ohio and not sure how John E and Regina fit in with either group (although he could be the son John found in the 1880 census listing because age and birthdate are a pretty good match.)

In the book Along the Trails of Yesterday: A History of McIntosh County bu Nina Farley Wishek published by the Ashley Tribune in 1941 is a charming story about the Norwegian settlement in McIntosh, beginning on page 125. The story is taken from a letter from Mrs. Albert Johnson to the book's author who the author identifies as a long time friend who she recently reconnected with after she found her living in Lehr, North Dakota. Mrs. Johnson mostly delves in the memories about her family and upbringing, but she does say this about her husband's family:

"Albert's folks from the State of Wisconsin came as far as Aberdeen, S.D. by train and brought with them horses, cattle and household goods. They drove their horses and cattle from Aberdeen to McIntosh County. He remembers well, the Indian scare when Sittling Bull was supposed to have broken away and was on this side of the Missouri coming this way. They loaded all of their provisions and some clothes and with some guns and pitch forks ready left for Ashley, where everyone was going to fight off the coming Indians. When they got as far as Garbelman's place north of Hoskins, some went on horseback to Ashley to get the news. When they came back with the news that all was well they returned home."

At the close of the letter (which was dated 11 Dec 1939) there is also a list of the names of the early Norwegian settlers which included among the about 60 names total are Halvor Johnson, Christ Johnson, Martin Johnson, John Johnson, Albert Johnson. In the text moves of some of the folks are mentioned, including a number who went to Canada in 1903 and Saskatchewan in 1904, but no more detail about her in-laws.

Lehr, North Dakota published a 75th anniversary history in 1973 and the book contains biographies of Albert J and Oline Johnson page 50, Arthur O. and Lyla Johnson, pg 50, Henry M. and Edna Johnson pg 51 & Robert L and Delores Johnson pg 52.

The story about Albert and Oline begins this way:
"Albert J. Johnson, son of Halvor and Pernella Johnson was born on March 22, 1875 in Osseo, Wis. He was 12 years of age when his parents left their home in Wisconsin to homestead in Dakota Territory. Their homestead was located northwest of the town of Hoskins..." No other details on Albert's parents or the siblings but Albert and his wife planned to follow "the rush to Canada", bought land in Canada but decided after all to remain in the U.S.

Arthur Johnson, Robert Johnson, Henry Johnson are sons of Albert and Oline, so the stories in the Lehr book are about each of them, their experiences and descendants. Another brother named Clarence Johnson who in 1973 is mentioned as being a chef in Pocatello, Idaho. The only sister is Agnes who is buried near her parents.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Such a change of name is possible and since we don't know these people well, we can only speculate why such a change was adopted. Perhaps all will be revealed some place down the line.

One other source I am planning to look at is the WPA Pioneer Biography Files to see if Albert was interviewed. If he was, there is a possibility of detail about his siblings and parents and particularly where they were born, or lived or where they died.

I'll post what ever I find.

Thanks for all your hard work. I am not sure how you find all the information. The Johnson connection is sure interesting.

Hi,

In the North Dakota WPA Pioneer Biography Files, Albert Julius Johnson has a file. Here is the family information abstracted from it:

Albert's parents' names are
Halvor Johnson, Halvor is now dead, the date of death is unknown but occured in Canada. Halvor's birthdate is given as 1836 and birthplace Solar, Norway

Pernelle Peterson, died at Ashley, N.Dak in May 1908
Pernelle's birthdate 2 Aug 1840 and birthplace is Solar, Norway

The siblings of Albert who came to North Dakota are listed as:
Martin Johnson died 1906, came to McIntosh County in 1883
Christ Johnson died 1931 came to McIntosh County in 1883
Theo. Johnson died 1910 came to McIntosh County in 1889
John Johnson lives at Danzig, N.D. came to McIntosh County 1889
Charley Johnson lives at Graham Hill, Sask. Canada, came to McIntosh County in 1889

This file is not dated but the project ran from 1936 to about 1940.

There is a small history of Danzig, North Dakota. Not a lot of data on these people in there. The daughter Agness Pearl Johnson's funeral was held through the Danzig Lutheran church and there were no other mentions of the Johnsons in any of the other pastoral acts recorded in the history from Danzig Lutheran. There is a picture of Albert Johnson dressed in overalls standing in front of the store he purchased in 1915 in Danzig, and a picture of Clarence and Robert in a local band, but no date. There is a map of the Pudwill cemetery and all the Johnsons mentioned previously in the headstone transcriptions are all buried in the block, so likely this John is the brother.

All this information is so interesting. Also interesting is the fact that Pernille is listed as Pernille Peterson. Her father was Thorstein Pederson. My husband has always said he knew there were relatives of some sort in North Dakota and Canada. So now we know. Thanks. I am still going to try to see if I can find any info of when Pernille and Halvor lived in Wisconsin. I am sure they lived near Oline and Ole.

Getting church records for the families in Wisconsin might be very good. Early confirmation records often contain baptism date and place.

Even the death certificate for Nellie Johnson could contain more information about her, presumably if her husband who would have known her parents in Norway, was the informant. N.D. dc are fairly inexpensive $5/each.

Good Luck
