Hello, I am posting here in hopes of some help in building my family tree. My grandfather's name is Roy Peter Johnsen, he was born in the U.S. in 1937. I am trying to find info on his father. He emigrated to the U.S. from Norway in 1921 but after hours and hours of searching the Ellis Island records, Arkivverket records, and using Ancestry.com I was only able to find limited information on him. What I know for sure is after emigrating his name was Egil Johnsen and he married Lilly (Olsen) Johnsen who was also born in Norway. I have found the deed to their house at 1955 East 37th Street , Brooklyn NY. He was born in 1903 and died in 1942, and the deed was past to his wife Lilly. Lilly was born in 1904 and died in 1984, the deed was then past to my grandfather Roy. I found a 1930 U.S. Census that lists this same address and lists Egil Johnson , Lily Johnson , and child Gert Johnson. Also the census spells their last name Johnson, it is a mis-spelling because the deeds and any other info I've found spell it Johnsen. Also I am sure that Lilly is spelt with three L's, not two. (in fact I have named my two year old child after her, Lilly)

Information I am unsure of, Roy's daughter (my mom) has told me was that his name was changed after coming to the U.S. Egil is correct for his first name but his last name was Johannesen or Johansen. My mom has some paperwork that belonged to him but only as Egil Johnsen. My mom also told me that Egil and Lilly's first child was named Christian and died from a car accident at age 5. She was unsure of the child's birthplace. Although Lilly and Egil came to the U.S. at different times my mom believed their families ( Olsen and Johannesen/Johansen ) knew each other, perhaps lived in the same area.

Well that is about all the info I have, if anyone can provide me with any additional info or where I should continue my search PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know. Thank you very much for your time.

Here is Egil's marriage to Lillie from the same web page:

Johansen Egil J Feb 13 1924 Kings 2335 J525

Still going by Johansen then!

I know that the 1930 Census lists Lilly as immigrating in 1924. But since she was married in Feb of 1924 perhaps she arrived in 1923? Here is a candidate from 1923. She is going to Brooklyn New York. Her father is listed as Aksel Olsen of Bergen.

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Lilly P Olsen

Birth Year: abt 1905
Birth Location: Nrw
Birth Location Other: Bergen
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Scandinavian
Port of Departure: Bergen
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Stavangerfjord

You did mention that perhaps Egil and Lilly new one another or at least their families came from the same area in Norway. As another long shot after Lily Petrine. Here is an Egil from Bergen. born in 1903. Look down toward the bottom for Egil Johannes Grønner. At the least something to ponder.

In the 1910 Norwegian census there are 42 55 Egil Johansen of all ages and birthplaces name spelling variations. There are some born in 1903 but none appear to be from Bergen. Here is link to findings if all goes well:

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/sok/1910?fornavn=egil&etternavn=johan%2A&kjonn=&familiestilling=&sivilstand=&yrke=&fodselsaar=&fodested=&alder=&bostatus=&ny_husholdning=&sedvanlig_bosted=&antatt_oppholdssted=&trossamfunn=&bygning_for_natteopphold=&arbeidsledig=&etnisitet=&spraak=&merknader=&utflyttingsaar=&tilbakeflyttingsaar=&bosted_i_norge=&bosted_i_amerika=&stilling_i_amerika=&merknader_amerika=&type=person&bosted=&gaardsnummer=&bruksnummer=&gaardseier=&hustype=&beliggenhet=&etasje=&page=1

Another issue is if Egil came to New York in 1921 as in the census, there aren't so many possible arrivals. Most appear to be older or younger than someone born in 1903 would be arriving in 1921. Here is a possibility from the Ellis Island web site, a man named Egil Levan (in the index portion, the actual name may be Levang, rather than Johansen)

The confirmation record for Lilly Petrine is #26. She was born in Bergen, her baptismal record is #84.

The confirmation record for Anna Margeda is #31. She was born out of wedlock at Alstadhaug and her parents were Iver Tønder and Margrethe Mathilde Pedersen. The bapt. record is #23. it says that Margrethe Mathilde got attestation to go to Trondhjem right afterwards.

The baptismal record for Agnes Margit is #127.

Lillys mother, Margrethe Mathelie, was born Ørland (not Sørlandet as said in the 1910 census) April 12 1872, see bapt record #45.
Her parents were Peter Olaus Petersen, Sivertsvig and Edrika Anna Andersdatter.

Lilly P. Olsen's destination in 1923 was cousin Mrs. Aslaug Archer in 211 Warren St. Brooklyn, N.Y. Aslaug's husband is listed as Erling B. Archer.

Not important for this case, but I believe Aslaug is this one:

Aslaug Glimme, born 05 Feb 1899, emigrating from Bergen on 04 Sep 1919.
Father: Nils Glimme born 05 Sep 1864, Voss, Hordaland

Aslaug G Archer
Spouse: Erlin
Birth: 05 Feb 1899, Bergen, Norway
Death: 1993, Middlesex, Connecticut

Ron,

Do you have any evidence that Egil was a seaman. Here is an arrival, maybe, into New York. He is listed on the manifest but with a line drawn through his name. He is listed as a cabin boy ? hard to read.

Name: Johannes Egil E??
Arrival Date: 4 May 1921
Birth Year: abt 1904
Age: 17
