My grandmother Marianne Henriksdatter was born in 1872 in Trondenes her father was Henrik Lukessen. She emmigrated to America in either 1893 or 94 with with brother Lukas. We've been told that Lukas was diagnosed with TB at some point and went back to Norway. I would love to know how and when she left Norway and what happened to her brother.

We also have a information going back quite a few years on her sideof the family, but I'm having trouble determining if it's on her mothers or fathers side.

Here is a candidate for you leaving Trondheim in 1893, Mariane Henriks. However I did not find a Lukas. She was going to Northwood North Dakota.

Here is a candidate for her arrival in Canada. Looking at the original manifest the name could very well be Henriksen and not Knukson. Also she is going to North Dakota as is a Oluf Nellssen listed next to her on the manifest. He is called Oluf Nils in the Digitalarkivet Emigranter fra Trondheim record.

Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
Name: Mariane Knukson
Gender: Female
Age: 21
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1872
Date of Arrival: 29 Jul 1893
Vessel: Vancouver
Search Ship Database:
Port of Arrival: Quebec and Montreal, Quebec
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England

This is Marianne, her parents, grandparents and siblings in 1875.

The baptismal record for Marianne Kristine is #46. Her fathers full name is Henrik Ernst Lukassen.

Mariannes oldest sister Hilda Lovise was born out of wedlock, her mother was Andrea Kirstine Pedersdatter, see #66.

Mariane Kristines parents were married June 13 1865, see #6.

The baptismal record for Mariane Kirstines father, Henrich Ernst Lukassen, is #26, he was born Febr 1 1834 and his parents were Lukas Hansen and Mette Margrethe Michelsdatter, at Nordvigen.

Luchas Hansen (28 years old) and Mette Chirstine Mikkelsdatter (25 years old) were married Oct 15 1824, see #19. (I believe Mette Christine Mikkelsdatter should have been Mette Margrethe Michelsdatter - proof found from bapt. records for Henrich Ernsts oldest brother Hans Petter #31 and oldest sister Helena Birgitha #50.)

Lucas Hansen was baptized Oct 25 1795, see 21 Trinit on right page. His parents were Hans Lucasen and Helena Johnsdatter, at Nordvigen.

Lucas Hansen, his parents and siblings in 1801.

Mette Margrethe Michelsdatter was baptized Sept 2 1798, see 13 Søndag e Trin on left page. Her parents were Michel Olsen and Anne Pedersdatter, at Nordvigen.

Perhaps Lukas left at a different time than his sister Mariane. Here is a Lukas Hagbarth Herniks. leaving in 1901 and going to North Dakota.

Wonderful information. I'm sure that the Lucas Hagbarth Henriksen you found is Mariane's brother, we thought they came over here together. Marianne was married to Torkild Halvorson (who was on the 1873 Valkyrian Voyage) and they had 4 children by 1901, her two oldest died the next year 2 days apart of diptheria.

We've been told that Lucas did not stay in the US, do you see any record of him returning to Norway?

This is far from definitive, but here are all people of that birthdate 7 Nov 1874 in the 1910 Norwegian census. It doesn't prove anything, as he could have returned already and died or perhaps he was still in America?

My father was born to Mariane and Torkild Halvorson in 1904 and they named him Lucas Hagbert Halvorson. Must have been named after his uncle Lucas, I don't find any record of Lucas' death in ND, but we have been told he had TB and returned to Norway....maybe it's just one of those mysteries that can't be solved. Thank you for all your help.

From Cemeteries of North Dakota, Steele County, Volume 3B, published Red River Valley Genealogical Society, Ostervold Cemetery page 77:
Thorkild Halvorson fodt 21 Nov 1861- dode 19 June 1910
Henry Eres Halvorson fodt 24 Juni 1896-dode 22 Feb 1902
Anne Elizabeth Halvorson fodt 27 Feb 1898-dode 24 Feb 1902

If you think Lucas lived near this family, you might want to check the church registers for a service for Lucas. Otherwise there are several area newspapers which might contain mention of Lucas in them, if he died there. The State Historical Society of North Dakota keeps microfilm of N.D. newspapers and the list for each community / county is searchable at their website. Area papers might include the Hope Pioneer, Northwood Gleaner, Mayville Tribune, etc.
