I came across an old photograph at an antique store identified as "Captain of the Norge" (handwritten on the back of the photo). There is no date on the photo nor is there a name indicating who took the photo. Could this be Capt. Gundell or an earlier captain? I could find no photos of Capt. Gundell on the internet so I am asking all you out there. I am not sure, but the uniform does not seam to fit with the Scandinavian America Line uniform of a captain. Can you see the 3 stars on his collar? What does the badge on his hat look like? Could it be a Thingvalla Line captain (pre 1898)? As far as I know V. Gundel was a captain on the Norge from 1901-1904.

Thank you for the responses. The person in my photo does bear a resemblance to the sketch of Capt. Knudsen. I also had my doubts that someone that looks as old as the person in my photo could have survived an hour or two in the water before being rescued.
Yes, Christian Bernhard Knudsen was formerly the captain of the ill fated S/S Danmark. He became captain of the S/S Norge after the Danamark was lost in 1889. Knudsen was the captain of the Norge till Gundel took over in 1901. Your photo however, must be earlier then 1898 when the ownership of the Norge went to DFDS and was operated under the Scandinavian America Line.
