Hi ! I am looking for Kristian Olsen and his daughter Olava, I have them arriving to New York 9th of June 1870 with the ship Anglia. After that I am not able to find them. The Norwegian emigrant lists says their destination was La Crosse, Wisconsin. Kristian Olsen is born 4 th. July 1836 in Oslo/ Christiania and Olava 10 th of April 1855 in Oslo ( so she is not 11 as the emigration papers indicates ) In 1889 one of his other daughters visited the US, her destination was the Dakotas, that could be a visit to one of the above persons or both. That is the only indication of their whereabouts I have.

Here is his arrival along with his daughter from Ancestry.com. A Kay Hanson has modified the name in the Ancestry.com record to give his complete name of Kristian.

Here is a candidate for you. Houston County, Minnesota is across the river from La Crosse Wisconsin. Birth month is Feb not April.

Perhaps this person?
South Dakota, Territorial Census, 1885 Name: Chris Olsa?? Age: 48 Birth Year: abt 1837 Birth Place: Norway Race: White Census Date: 1 Jun 1885 Census Location: District 99, Moody, Dakota Territory Census Page #: 35 Enumeration District: 99
Other Census data show this person to be born in 1840 or 1841 and to have immigrated in 1867, may not be a good fit.

Here are all the Olava aged 18-36 in the northern part of Dakota Territory in 1885 (the part that became North Dakota in 1889):
Name Age Relation Occupation Nativity Address City ED County Anderson, Olava 23 Wife Housewife MN 13-015-19 Traill Clementson, Olava 19 Wife Norway 15-039-22 Cass Erickson, Olava 22 Wife Norway 67-030-37 Richland Larson, Olava 30 Wife Norway Grand Forks City 09A-114-02 Grand Forks Mekkelson, Olava 18 Wife Norway 34-030-26 Steele Nelson, Olava 26 Husband's Sister Cook Norway 34-029-26 Steele Nielsen, Olava 36 Wife Norway 14-021-09 Traill
Olava Larson would the exact right age but her oldest 2 children were born in Norway, so doesn't match information regarding migration.

In spite of messy transcribing, I think this is the family of Olava Brandin. The match is not exact, the birth is Jul 1859 not Jul 1855 and the immigration year is 1871 not 1870 but this is likely the Olava Olson from La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Thanks for helping out. The most promising one I feel is Olava Oleson from Cass county, but there is no way I can tell for sure. The family from " digitalarkivet " is the correct family,
Here are some persons that comes from Ullensager that emigrated the same day and have La Crosse as their destination. I suspect that they traveled together to La Crosse. I have looked for this other persons as well to see if i could find out where they ended up, without result that is.

Just out of curiosity, which sister came in 1889? Did she stay forever or just for a visit? If she did stay stateside for a length of time, if she returned to Norway and was still alive in the 1910 census she may have answered the questions where she was during her time in US....
In the 1865 census they were on a farm called Tangenmoen were there any other farm names which they might have adopted / adapted for their surname in US?
The Wisconsin State Historical Society website has the pre-1907 vital records database. It has 4 Olava Olson marriages:
Olava Olson m. Albert M. Hanson 27 July 1884 Buffalo County
Olava Olson m. Andreas N. Vik 5 June 1887 Trempealeau County
Olava Olson m. Hermand M. Wivelstad 25 Sept 1886 Trempealeau County
Olava Olson m. Carlot Anderson 26 Dec 1889 Jackson County
The only one of these which can definitely be eliminated is Olava Wivelstad. She's in www.findagrave.com as having been born 1868, dying 1935.
Cass County North Dakota marriages from 1870s-1944 are searchable here:
http://library.ndsu.edu/db/marriage/
But I did not find an Olava Olson. However a number of early marriages didn't make it into the county records and perhaps there is one for her.
Nearby counties would be Clay County, Minnesota searchable at www.mncounty.com and Traill County pre 1900 marriages at www.usgenweb.com, choose North Dakota, choose Traill county. |

There is a Halvor Olsen living in Wisconsin in the 1880 Census that might fit with the passenger list you posted. However he seems to have more children than can be explained by your list. Vernon County is next to La Crosse County..
Name: Halvor Olson Age: 68 Birth Year: abt 1812 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1880: Jefferson, Vernon, Wisconsin Has wife Lesil age 50 and five children, four born in Norway and one born Wisconsin

The sister that went over in 1889 was Anna, but it was just for a visit as I have her as a witness when another sister babtized a child in July 1890 in Oslo. She could have emigrated on a later stage as I can not find her in the Norway censuses for 1900 or 1910. 2 of the other sisters Ragna and Mina both married Kristoffersen and emigrated to Pennsylvania 1891 and 1893.
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Anna Olsen Name: Anna Olsen Arrival Date: 5 Aug 1889 Birth Year: abt 1869 Age: 20 Gender: Female Ethnicity/Race- /Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland Destination: Dakota Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: Servia Search Ship Database: Search the Servia in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Yes, I have tried to find both Olava and Christian for marriages in N.Dakota at the " ndsu " sites, no result for me either. I have never seen another name than Olsen used on this family, Christian was not a farmer so they did not get a farmname. At Tangensmoen he tried to start a business in getting oil from the trees without any succes.

So Christian was sort of an entrepreneur...
Did Olava have an additional middle name besides Emilie (Amalia)?
I guess the most usual meaning & use of the name "Dakota" would be Dakota Territory and after 2 Nov 1889 North and South Dakota. Even today my cousins from Minnesota always wonder how things are going in Dakota... But there are a couple of counties named Dakota--in Minnesota and Nebraska and towns named Dakota in Turner county Georgia, Stephenson County, Illinois, Winona county, Minnesota as well as 2 named Dakota City in Humboldt County, Iowa and Dakota county, Nebraska.
Its rather curious about the sisters going to Pennsylvania. The earliest crude oil production in US was in Pennsylvania, 1869 Titusville. Do you know when the sisters died or about their families? There a couple of newspaper websites online in which obituaries could be searched.
Here is a listing from the Biography Index at the Institute for Regional studies site--person might be worth checking on:
Jacobson, Olava Amalie Olson North Dakota Federation of Women's Clubs Pioneer Mother Project Records, Indexes and Biographies [microfilm] : Complete Biographies Series., ca. 1938-1953. Microfilm CT3260.N56 1989 [Reels 3-5] |
