I need help finding a Tom (Tor, Tov, Thor) Kittilsons, parents. Tom was born in July of 1850. He married Signe Swenson, they had a daughter in 1888, and came to the US in 1888.
I believe his mother's name is Ingeborg, and I know he has a brother. Ingeborg came in 1880. Ingeborg was born about 1824. I believe they were from Telemark.
When Tom came over to the US, (I have the emigrant list) it says he and Signe were from Omlid.
I also heard a story, that Tom was married before Signe in Norway, they had a baby, and the wife died in childbirth, and he was so distraught, he just got up and traveled around Norway, and that is how he met Signe. The child lived, and I have no idea where they were, or the wifes name.
I have a ton of information for this family once they get to US, they setteled in Minnesota, Roseau County.
Thank you, Kim Kucera |

I think his brother's name was Ellif?
I am wondering if Ingeborg came over with Ellif? |

Tom's occupation was listed as a "Shoe maker" on his emigration list. I see his father was one also!
I have a census for 1895 in Roseau County, MN showing Ellif, his wife (which I can barely read her name - Inger? Enger?) they have 2 sons born in North Dakota, Alfred Karl, and Edward. Also, another person is listed, and I can not tell if it is Ingeborg the mother? the age is wrong for her, but that can be just trying to decifer the scribbles!
Thanks so much for the help! Kim |

A possibility for Omlid, Omli in 1865, is a farm in Morgedal in Kviteseid municipality, Telemark. Kċre |

Another option is Ċmli (Omlid) in Aust Agder County.
Signe Svendsdatter b. 1864 was from Ċmli in Aust Agder and Tov Kittilsen b. 1850 was from Vinje i Telemark.
They got a son Kittil born out of wedloc July 24. 1885. They married Sept. 14. 1885 Maid Signe Svendsdatter and "enkemand" widower and "skomager" shoemaker Tov Kittilsen from Vinje, see on top #17

Thank you so much for the information, Einar, lyndal40, Kare, and jkmarler! It is very much appreciated!
Is there a way to find out if Ingeborg and her son Ellif and his wife came over together. Ingeborg came to NY in November of 1880.
Thanks, Kim |

The LDS Family History Library catalog indicates that there is a set of microfiche you can order which include an alphabetical list by given name then surname of the people who emigrated from Telemark county, Norway until the year 1900. It lists the persons name, age or date of birth, occupation, residence, destination, name of the ship, and date it sailed. If a family is listed the wife's given name and age, and the children's given names and ages are given.
You could also check that source.
I doubt that I can include a working URL link to that entry in the online catalog but I'll try - https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/show?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fcatalog-search-api%3A8080%2Fwww-catalogapi-webservice%2Fitem%2F63848
If that link is not working then search the online catalog for PLACE=Telemark and topic = Emigration and Immigration https://www.familysearch.org

Eilif/Ellef em. Mai 7. 1880 via Oslo on ship Hero, the record might be incorrect, he is recorded em. alone. No sign of his mother Ingeborg Tovsdatter. link
Tov (Tom) as you know and his family em. March 28. 1888, dep. port was Kristiansand

Kare - thanks for the information, I am not sure if Ellif was married in Norway or the US. His children, at least the ones I know about were both born in the US. In the 1895 MN census I have, he is listed with his wife, it is hard to read it could be Enger? I know both Ellif and his mother Ingeborg died here in MN in Roseau County. I might have to try to do more digging on my end to see what I can find. I know the 1900 census has Ellif's two sons living with Ingeborg, the grandmother.
Thanks for all the help! Kim |
