Wow lyndal40 - you have found a lot of very interesting information! Thank you so much!!

The Matsons' farm was fairly close to Lethbridge (about an hour driving now, so not sure how long it took by horse!), and it was the Lethbridge newspaper that ran the article on my great grandfather. Very possible they are a family connection - thank you!

Have you read the original newpaper article, or an online photocopy at http://lethbridgeherald.newspaperarchive.com? Perhaps the original paper is easier to read? To clarify Asbjørn's last name...
It could be available at the newspaper office.

You could also try to search for Stueland at the site, and read the two hits.

Jacob Tobias Stueland left the ship in Durban in 1896, and started his own business down there, building houses of bricks, and factories.
In Norway, he bought Varhaug woodworking factory in 1922, and renamed it Stueland woodworking factory.
Two of his sons (Asbjørn and Trygve Stueland) ran the business in Rogaland, Norway, while the 3rd son Odd stayed in Durban, South Africa.

Since there were 3 sons, why would only one nephew be named...?

Unfortunately, if you do the math based on known birthdates, neither Jakob Stueland nor his wife Justi could be siblings of Martin Matsen (thus making their son Asbjørn Martin's nephew):

Martin Matsen b. Sept 1869
Jakob Stueland b. 22 July 1869
Justi Stueland b. 29 Mar 1869

Here is Justi's baptism #27:
Kildeinformasjon: Rogaland fylke, Time i Lye, Klokkerbok nr. B 4 (1868-1878), Fødte og døpte 1869, side 17.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=15902&idx_id=15902&uid=ny&idx_side=-18

May be there is more than one Jakob Tobias Stueland? Here from the 1865 census is one born Lyngdal about 1845:

I wonder if Ailish can tell us more about John Knutson, where did he live, has he been found in any Census data, did he marry? Maybe he can provide a route back to where in Norway did the family live.

Here is the Lethbridge Herald article from June 22nd, 1932. Page 3. Do you have a better copy of the article? It would be of great value to have the correct name of his nephew.
Martin Matson died June 21st, 1932.

Stueland seems like a wrong track. His lastname looks more like Skjølesen or someting...?

His first name could also be Arthur? Could he be a son of John Knutson? Another alternative for the last name is "Stoelesen"...?

Hi Everyone!

Thanks so much for all of your research and suggestions. You've all been really wonderful!

I don't have a better copy of the paper - I found it online as well.

Unfortunately, I don't know more about John Knutson, but I did find out the place my great grandpa was born - Ringsaker, Norway on Sept 14, 1869. One of my dad's cousins had an old letter with some family information. I am pretty excited about that!

His wife, Minnie, was born in Prairie, North Dakota. She also had a brother named Joe who came to live in Claresholm as well and was married to Ishbelle.
